USA REPORT

Two of the three American ski areas that had been open since last fall finally ended their 7-month-plus 2024–25 ski seasons on Sunday. California's Mammoth Mountain, as well as Arapahoe Basin in Colorado, called it a day on the 15th. Mammoth's Panorama Gondola was back in action for its closing weekend alongside Broadway Express, Face Lift Express, and Chair 23 lifts. Skiers on closing day were treated to free coffee and donuts while supplies lasted first thing, and joined in a final group lap and a closing weekend photo around 1 p.m.

The Beartooth Basin summer ski area on the Colorado/Wyoming border—which had aimed to stay open until the start of July this year—decided to end its season, its first in two years, at short notice after three weeks of operations on Sunday.

That all means there are now two places still open for lift-accessed skiing and riding in North America. Timberline (0/56" / 0/140cm) on Mt. Hood in Oregon expects to remain open into August. It currently has about a fifth of its terrain still open on the upper mountain, but its published base depth has been dropping fast in the current hot weather. The hike-to terrain park at Copper Mountain also aims to stay open through summer, with public access available Fridays to Sundays. It’s used by campers at the local Woodward facility during the week.

USA FORECAST

There's no real change to the "mostly sunny" forecast for the U.S. West. Overnight lows on the high slopes where Timberline's Palmer Snowfield is located should drop into freezing temperatures, but daytime highs will continue to reach into the 50s and 60s—even at altitude—over the coming week.
