First Flakes Arrive in Colorado as Skiers Eye October Openings
Weekly Snow News for North America, updated 10 September 2025: Early snow dusts the Rockies, Alaska and Midwest, hinting at an October start for some resorts.

- Colorado Rockies and Midwest see early-season flurries.
- Alaska’s ridgelines also receive September snow.
- Resorts eye October–November openings as conditions allow.
- Big Snow New Jersey remains the only current lift-served skiing.
USA
There were more ‘winter tasters’ across the US and Canada this week, with snowfall reported on Colorado’s 14,000ft peaks and in Michigan. Big Snow New Jersey remains the only lift-served skiing option, operating indoors.
Most resorts are less than two months away from planned early November openings, with some possibly starting in October if conditions allow.
Forecast
Further early snowfall looks limited. NOAA predicts warmer, drier conditions through mid-September. Brief flurries may occur above 3,000m in Colorado, but accumulation will be minimal. Alaska’s panhandle has the best chance for light snow midweek.
