More Resorts Opening Early as Heavy Snowfall Hits Colorado

Three more ski areas will open in Colorado today (November 7th, 2018), and they’re all opening earlier than planned.

The early-openings, which will take the number of areas already open in the famous ski state to six, are all the result of heavy and repeat snowfalls since early October.  Most of the state’s ski areas have now seen more than a metre of snow and those already open report 60-80cm bases.

Breckenridge and Keystone are both opening three days ahead of schedule, Eldora 10 days.

We’re opening early! Come join us this Wednesday, November 7 for Opening Day – the earliest opening in more than two decades! Get all the details here: https://www.eldora.com/culture/blog-and-news/all-blogs-and-news/Opening-Early

Breckenridge (pictured below yesterday) has announced it will have 10 runs open today – three greens, two blues and five black diamond runs:

Callie’s Alley, Spruce, High Anxiety, Rounders and Little Johnny

It’s a very different story to a year ago when a warm dry autumn (followed by a warm dry winter) left resorts delaying planned opening dates and then struggling to open much terrain at all.  The ski season that followed was reported to be the worst for 30 years, so Colorado resorts are hopping these early signs are good – with snowfalls well up on the average.

Things started well in the state early last month when Wolf Creek became the first in North America to open for the season on October 13th.  It was followed by Arapahoe Basin and Loveland.

The snow is continuing to fall with Loveland (pictured top) posting repeat ‘powder alarms’ for 20cm or more of fresh snowfall in 24 hours on more than three days already this month.
