Huge $100m+ Multi-Year New Lifts Project At Mürren Is Complete
Four state-of-the-art funifor lifts climb over 2,000 vertical metres (6,562vft) at Mürren

The SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project, a massive overhaul of the Mürren-Schilthorn lift system in Switzerland's stunning Jungfrau region, is more or less complete with the final new lift going into service.

First announced in 2019 and estimated to have cost between CHF 90 million and CHF 100 million (approx. $100–$112 million). The project involved replacing old cable carts (aerial trams), with state-of-the-art ‘funifor’ lifts that are especially secure in strong winds and are faster with a greater carrying capacity than their predecessors.

In addition to the world’s steepest cable car to Mürren, which opened back in December 2024, all four Funifor cable cars on the Mürren-Birg-Schilthorn route are now in operation. The integrated lifts climb over 2,050 vertical metres up from Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen valley from Stechelberg (920m / 3,018 feet) via the car-free mountain villages of Gimmelwald and Mürren to the Schilthorn summit at (2970 m / 9744 feet) in a spectacular location in front of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains.

Intensive construction work has been underway between Stechelberg and the Schilthorn for the last three years. Then on 2ndApril 2026, the final cable car in the SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project came into service between Birg and the Schilthorn. Around 200 guests attended a midday celebrations at the Schilthorn.

“A new era is beginning!” says Johannes Stöckli, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Schilthorn Cableway Ltd., with delight. “The completion of the final cable car is a historic moment for the Schilthorn Cableway Ltd. The fact that we were able to complete this major project on schedule is no mean feat. This makes us even more delighted with what we have achieved and the efforts of everyone involved.”

It is not just the cable cars that are new, but also the associated stations in Stechelberg, Mürren, Birg and on the Schilthorn. The light-coloured copper façades of the lift docks are a defining feature, creating a consistent, distinctive style across all stations. Equally impressive is the exposed cable car technology with its magenta-coloured wheels. It draws on elements of the old Gimmelwald cable car station, whose technical design was considered particularly innovative in the 1960s. Inside the stations, the extensive use of wood and generous window fronts creates a bright atmosphere and unobstructed views of the unique natural surroundings.

Whilst the cable car installation work has been completed, further development projects will be carried out at the stations over the coming months. In Mürren for example, a new sports shop with an integrated bar is being built on the arrival and departure level of the new cable cars, it is due to open by June.
