Fresh August Snowfall in the Alps

Fresh August Snowfall in the Alps

There has been up to 30cm (a foot) of snow reported across high slopes in the Alps over the past few days.

Glacier 3000 near Gstaad in Switzerland posted the largest accumulation, for the Zugspitze Glacier, the country’s highest lift-served point, pictured below this week, they reported 10cm.

The snowfall is part of mixed weather in the alps that has seen some of the four glacier ski areas that are currently open for summer skiing close temporarily due to strong winds or low visibility.

Hintertux in Austria, Passo Stelvio in Italy and Saas Fee and Zermatt are all currently open when not closed by bad weather. You can also ski Zermatt’s glacier by ascending from Cervinia on the Italian side.

No French resorts are currently open and with Tignes announcing it won’t open until late November it seems none will open for skiing for another three months or so there, but Les Arcs was among resorts publishing pictures of fresh snowfall up high there too.
