A Day Of Boarding Celebration
Nearly five decades after founding Burton, Jake Burton Carpenter’s impact continues to shape snowboarding. On March 14, 39 resorts will honour his legacy through A Day For Jake a global invitation to simply get out and ride.
“Less about ceremony and more about participation. It’s a day to get on snow. To ride with friends. To watch snowboard films, tune your gear, and revisit your favorite riding spots,” a Burton spokesperson said, adding, “If you can’t celebrate at a resort—that’s ok. Go surf. Go skate. Do cartwheels in your front yard just get outside and have fun with it. That’s what Jake’s philosophy was all about.”
Nearly 50 years ago, Jake, who passed away in November 2019, founded Burton out of a barn in Vermont with a clear and unwavering conviction, that snowboarding should be fun, expressive, and shared. Over the decades, he helped transform what was once considered a niche backyard hobby into a global sport and enduring culture.
From fighting for mountain access in the early days to building competition pathways and driving product innovation grounded in real riding, Jake’s impact continues to shape snowboarding today.

Most winters, Jake (pictured above) logged over 100 days on snow. He believed that staying on his board was the best way to maintain a direct connection to the sport as it continually evolved, often starting his winter season in August in Chile alongside the local Burton Chilean crew.
“On March 14, snowboarders around the world will once again gather on mountains and in their local communities to celebrate the sport Jake helped shape,” the spokesperson continued, adding, “ A Day For Jake is a global day to celebrate the life and legacy of Jake Burton Carpenter and to reconnect with the passion for snowboarding that defined him. It’s not about nostalgia—it’s about continuity. About carrying forward a belief system built on feeling, freedom, and shared experience.”
