Skier from Barcelona from Ski Spain Spain
Positive: - Near Barcelona city (about 2 hours drive one way, but you must pay a total of 32 Euros toll for a total of 4 tunnels both ways. Yes, you could drive with no toll on a small road, but then is 3 hours one way). - Trails usually well groomed. - Usually good weather (but the better the weather, the worse the snow). Negative: - Masella lies on a north face, so there is no sun (at all) in December and January. - Little lodge and eating facilities on or near slopes. - Web page and phone operators always overrated snow deep, number of open slopes, and weather and wind conditions (lift closures). - Personnel unfriendly. - Snowpark is small and not well prepared. - Small ski station (can be very crowded at weekends and holidays). - Very expensive lifts (41 Euros daily, in 2014, without slope insurance; much more expensive that any comparable ski station in Spain and on the Alps).

Masella is a great ski resort for many reasons: *Ski slopes (including slopes in the forest) for all skier levels, from beginners to expert skiers. *Great snow quality (well treated and maintained by Masella´s personnel). *Excellent views from its ski slopes (French Pyrenees, Andorra, Cerdanya Valley...) and... *Just 1.5 hours away from Barcelona! Perfect for a ski weekend and also for a 1-day ski trip with family and friends! In my view, the best ski resort in the eastern Pyrenees!

The beauty of Masella lies in the combination of the higher slopes, with extraordinary views over the Catalan Pyrenees and on the wide valley of Cerdanya, and the lower slopes, surrounded by trees and protected from the wind. To this setting near Masella you must add the proximity to Barcelona, which lies only 1.5 hours away, so this is the perfect resort for a weekend or even a one day ski trip! The surroundings include the valley of La Cerdanya, well known for its gastronomy and beautiful landscape.

Masella, what a frustrating ski resort. It must have some of the best ski terrain around. Very pretty, very interesting and something for everybody. You can even ski over to another resort. BUT! Snow is very unreliable in this area and when it does fall there never seems to be enough piste workers/machines to manicure it correctly. It's all very frustrating as this could be one of the best ski areas in the Pyrennes, but for the unpredictable weather. It's just too far east and too close to the med and global warming means it will get worse. Catch it right and you will have a ball!
