Hello everybody.
It has been a while since I last wrote here and I have much fresh stuff to tell.
Although I have been frustrated from the bad organization of the snow center which I like so much, I have to mention a few very positive things that took place lately.
1. The administration of the snow center seems to respond to our posts and to tens of others posted elsewhere. I do not remember an other time the last few years that the snow center opened at 16th December.
2. The prices remain the same with last year. Not that it's cheep but at least they were not "adjusted".
3. Since the only lift working was Achileas, the price was reduced (15 Euro)
3. After a couple of hours they opened the anchor lift and after 2 days they opened Stiga !!!. Yes Stiga was open all the previous week !!!!!.
It seems that something good is happening there.
I cross my fingers and will observe closely to report again with good news I hope.
Lets hope that a new "era" is emerging for the Kalavrita Snow Center.
I wish to all pleasant and safe rides and a happy new year.
See you on the slopes where I'll be tomorrow and for three days.
Cheers
Nick.
The worst possible organized resort in the world.(even worse than Parnassos). The one and only lift that is worth taking (Stiga 1-2 pistes) is double chaired and very slow so you have to wait 20 minutes to take it. Sometimes it doesn't work properly or it starts at 11.00-12.00 o'clock or maybe it doesn't works at all (like the first day that the resort operated for this year and they said that they hadn't time to get it ready!!! after the hole summer and the expectation of the upcoming snowfall). The personnel are bad and rude sometimes but they're not to blame so much as the management. The pass for the lifts costs 24 Euros at weekends and the skiers and snowboarders are so many so you can imagine that the profit is very high. However, no new lifts are made and even the older ones are not getting a little better. At the end of the day, the resort has some possibilities if management cares. But with these people managing don't expect nothing better than 5-6 10 minute runs each day with 2 hours nerve breaking waiting at the cashiers and the lifts.
I fully agreed with "A skier" and "R.Chrisanthopoulou".
Management is the worst I ever meet. I prefer 1 week in Alps by saving money with not going to Helmos. I don't want to see them all. They pretend that they know everything but really they don't know even the basics.
I'm really sorry.
Yes, I agree with the rest of you. It IS a great mtn, however it does have some serious problems, a lot of which can be fixed for little or no money, so why doesn't the management do anything to improve conditions? I have no idea. Here are my suggestions - (Mr Tsekouras are you listening?)
1. To improve the long lift lines: have the stupid lift attendants MAKE skiers FILL THE CHAIRS. It's ridiculous for 1 person to hog a 3-person chair lift. During peak hours, if skiers were made to fill the chairs, the wait time would be reduced by half.
2. How to improve safety: the outdoor areas around the lower chalet are very slippery and I've seen many people slip, fall and get hurt. How about putting some salt or rubber mats on these slippery areas? And the entrance to the chalet should have rubber mats - it's also a very slippery area and dangerous. PLUS, the upper chalet, the hall leading to the bathrooms - put rubber mats in there too. OR at least some salt.
3. Add one more "ticket kiosk" for the weekends. The existing one is not enough and you have to wait in line forever just to buy a lift ticket... Or how about buying tickets ON LINE through the kalavrita-ski website?
4. Do something with that big stone chalet on the upper level of the mtn. It's a pretty building and it should be put to use. How about using the lower level of that building for lockers and storage???
Hello everybody,
Here I write again, after a joyfull weekend at Helmos/Kalavrita resort.
This weekend I have to admit that the ski centre was fully prepared and worked fine.
The Styga lift as well as all the others were serviced and fully functional.
The pistes were in excellent condition and the off piste... like fluffy clouds.
The people responsible there did a great job after the unusual heavy snowfall we experienced all over Greece the previous days.
The only thing that I noticed wrong was that the official Kalavrita-ski site was informing the visitors that all roads leading to the resort were accessible only with snow chains which was not true.
All the roads leading from Diakofto up to the ski centre were absolutely snowless and without any spot of ice. Even a few turns of the road where the temperature was remaining at -4 celsius were clear; excellent.
It is likely that all the complaints done by all the people two Saturdays ago (and I asure you that they were many) helped for the good result.
Lets hope that it'll stay that way.
Enjoy.
Heya there everyone.
As I have wrote before, I am still a hot fan of Kalavrita resort.
Our problem has a name.
The name of who is 100% responsible for all the mess there is TSEKOURAS.
He is the one to blame for every "little" glitch in the system there since he is the manager for many years (as a matter of fact he has been for many years).
As I heard yesterday, they have even hire a special technician for supporting the lifts this year.
Great job.... its only the third functional weekend of this year and yesterday (Saturday 21st January, STYGA broke down holding more than 100 people on the air for more than an hour !!!!!! (not to mention that it was actually the first Saturday with STYGA 1&2 open). And its not only that.
Around 11:30 I was going up using the lift of ARTEMIS and it stopped 10m berore I reach the top.
I was waiting for it to restart and after 5-10mins, the operator of the lift yelled at me (personally me) to get off the lift because the lift could not function due to overweight !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just released the button and... miracle ! The lift started. And out of the 40 approx double buttons, only 15 or 20 had two skiers. All the rest was single persons!!
I cannot say anything else.
There are moments that I really feel embarrased for a few Greeks that destroy our country name as a tourist resort all year around.
Enjoy.
What can I say about Kalavryta that hasn't already been said? The lift prices are ridiculous when you consider that at Vasilitsa (which is a far superior centre) it costs only 13 euros for a day pass. Love Kalavryta's off-piste trails and when it's clear you are not likely to get a better view from any ski centre in Greece. Having said that, poor management and deadly slow lifts that can't cope with the volume of people during the busy times make for a frustrating experience far too often. Spend some cash, get some faster lifts!!

It was impossible last weekend (6th of January 2006) - the ski center was fully opererated, BUT with many many problems, one of them was the electrical power in Achilleas and Dafni lifts, we waited more than a half an hour, because the lifts was out of operation. I am wondering why the management of the Helmos Ski Center don't get worried about the operation of the Center.
After one year there was NOT ready to hold so many thirsty skiers, however they announced the price list ealrier in October, and they promoted the arrival of the Winters Olympic Games flame.
It's unacceptable to pay for less of 3 hours of skiing more than 20 euros.
Notice: For another such time Stiga opened at 11:00am.

This ski resort is the prevailing Greek mentality in a nutshell. Poor services for outrageous prices. "If customers don't have too much of a choice, do the absolutely minimum and rip them off anyway. What can they do?". It's a small resort by any global standards, even though the scenery is beautiful. And it's true; if you don't have a choice, well, you'll go there. Parnassos is quite a lot bigger, but it's too crowded and has plenty of people who just wanna show off, while nearby Arahova is just a fashion parade. By contrast, it's worth going to Helmos for nearby Kalavryta village which is a lot more picturesque and laid back. The Helmos ski resort, contrary to Parnassos which is a bold mountain, is also dotted with trees here and there, so you really enjoy a relaxed descent, feelng you are really in nature. The prices for using the ski lifts are outrageous indeed and there's little value for money but well, if you don't have a choice...
I belive that Kalavrita ski center is really a great center in Greece and especially for Peloponisos. But I think that there is a problem with the prices on the tickets......!The tickets are too expensive for anyone. I think that is not worth going there many times in the year. The rensposibles are 'stealers'....!!!
