We are in Bansko at the moment, on a ski holiday, and enjoying the new snow. There is lots of deep powder and lovely weather. The resort is bigger than I thought and there is loads to do but some of the people in the restaurants are a bit grumpy. Great value for money - lifts are all brand new and very fast. Probably half the price of France all in.

I hadn't skied for 20 years and really enjoyed my time in Bansko. I went with my son who hadn't skied before and he enjoyed himself as well. The gondola queue didn't seem bad when we were there 5-1-14, for a week, but saying that as we had booked ski school we could join the fast queue. Snow conditions weren't great; only 5 or 6 runs open and quite icy which then makes these slopes busy and probably more dangerous than normal. Hope Bansko has lots of snow from now on and everyone has a good time. When we were there we were sitting at a bar up the mountain having dinner in a t-shirt as it was 15 degrees so all we needed was a foot of snow the week before we went.

In Bansko for 10 days 08/01/14 - 18/01/14. Firstly, let me say I am a Bansko fan, this was our 5th trip in 8 years, value for money etc being one of the main drivers. Not sure there will be a 6th visit though; various advertising for the resort claims to have between 70 - 100% coverage of the slopes for "snow making". Someone should tell whoever runs the mountain they only work if you switch them on! Whilst we were there only 6 runs were open, many were nearly there and were covered by cannon but the problem seemed to be when it was cold enough for the cannon to be working, In the early hours staff were not there to get the things working. Talking to locals, the company "running" the mountain is run by one man who apparently is "a law unto himself" and it seems getting in staff overnight to make things as good as they can be is not high on his list of priorities! This is the first year we have been there, where the natural snow has been a problem. But the party has decided to switch next year and pay the extra to go to a resort so that if the same thing happens next year, we are in a resort where they have the knowledge and desire to pull out all the stops!

Skied Bansko over the New Year. Excellent snow making facilities in resort that were definitely needed! That is the only positive. Long queues for the gondola and then subsequent chair lifts, with many locals just trying to push through to the front. Staff managing the gondolas and chair lifts did nothing to stop this; seemed to be the norm. On the slopes, probably the most dangerous resort I have ever skied. Whilst ski 'police' were visible no action was taken that any of our party could see. Ski instructors, likewise, did nothing to manage the slopes; as happens in all other resorts I have skied in. Three injuries to our party as skiers and snowboarders were 'taken out'. The snowboading instructor, from the Ulen Ski School, who took me out, did not stop to check the damage. Medical center was good, if small. Medical attention, for me, will last into April, at the earliest, thanks to that collision. For beginners, this is not a resort for them (in my opinion) until the ski schools take control of the slopes and remove the lift passes from those unable or unwilling to manage their speed. I read that Bansko was the new Aspen!! Er, no. Will not return.

The snow has finally arrived! Dumping down on the mountain as I write. I'm in resort now. The wait is over but the fake snow production has been excellent under adverse conditions.

Bansko ski season, 2013 to 2014, has been a little disappointing for snow. This has been echoed in the Alps (although improving daily) and Austria. On the upside Bansko is a relatively snow sure resort in comparison to many of it's European neighbours. It has many snow cannons. Ski season, 2013 into 2014, has been highly unseasonal. Much the same way the rest of the world has demonstrated weather systems that have been unseasonal. However, there is plenty to do off-piste and about 50% of the slopes are open. Bansko is fantastic for newbie skiers and snowboarders and families on a budget. The lift passes, comparative to France, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, etc demonstrate excellent value for money. Further ski hire is plentiful. There are many outlets offering good quality, very good value ski hire. Lessons, again, by comparison to its neighbours in Europe, offers excellent value for money. So, if you're reading this and considering Bansko as your first dip into skiing, then it's a good place to start. For mums & dads reading this and trying to decide if this is a good place to come skiing with your infants to dip their toe into this fun sport I can confirm Ulen have a kindergarten. Warning: ridiculously busy over NYE week. So avoid. Otherwise, very good value. Start 9am finish 4pm. Included is one hour of ski tuition, hire and lunch for 60lev a day of 260lev a week. This works out at just over £100 per week. It has a good range of slopes and hosted the World Downhill Championship in 2012. Clearly not Espace Killey. However, enough to keep you occupied for a week or more. Après-ski : too many opportunities to mention. My personal favourite and a bit off the main strip is Harry's Bar. Good array of cocktails that start at 7 lev. Very reasonable value on piste eateries. I always compare Bansko to Spain in the 80s. It's going through major changes and development. I've seen it develop beautifully over the years. It's still got a long way to go. That said, it's old town is very quaint. It's clearly no Meribel. That said it offers it's own charm if you can see past the building works. If you want picture postcard resort this is probably not the resort for you. However, as I said it has it's own charm. The slopes themselves are nestled into a World Heritage site. It's flanked by woodland. Beautiful. Gondolas: Ulen desperately need a second gondola. I understand planning has been granted. I've seen no building works in relation to this. Get to the gondola at 8.15am is my advise. Be warned: exceptionally busy over Christmas and NYE. Imagine half-term the same. Once on the slopes, in very busy times, expect to wait about 10min. Outside these busy times it's okay. No major waiting for gondolas and lifts. 5 mid max. Hope the above helped.

Bansko is suffering: no snow, lifts at the top are not open and general conditions poor. Along with the lift pass issues where no season passes are available it's making the owners look stupid. At least they could have taken some money from locals who maybe only want a couple of hours fun a day. Instead we are all in the bars enjoying local hospitality.

Poor year for Bansko with very little snow, made even worse by allowing the water supply to the snow cannons to run dry. Without snow cannons, the pistes (currently 99% artificial snow) will not survive the warm temperatures. Very hard to find accurate information on the snow levels, from Bankso Ski and local app is very misleading. Stones showing through on many pistes, is not 70cm as stated on many sites. Only 40-50% open on poor quality artificial snow.

Out here at the moment; took a two week break. Snow conditions aren't that great but considering the lack of snow fall they have done very well with the artificial snow. Around 60 - 70% of pistes are open. New Year was pretty quiet. We got to the gondola every day at around 9am and queued for around 20 minutes. No queues when we were on the mountain even during the New Year rush. Much quieter now; very sunny!
