I've been coming to Alta for over 20 years. It's a skiers paradise. Today was a powder day. I am happy that there are no boarders, but I am also disappointed in the skiers who throw things at the very nice employees who board backdrop Snowbird. They do not cause a problem really. The Peruvian is hot. Two outdoor hot tubs and one warm swimming pool, also outdoors. Not ski out, but experts can ski back, and the walk is not bad, and shuttle to the base is fine. Lively bar scene, and a movie every night. Who cares if there's no nightlife.
Alta has the best snow in North America, bar none. There are a few areas that get more on average (e.g. Kirkwood, Mount Baker) but none that has the combination of quantity, quality, and consistency; the latter is key. Alta always seems to get good early season snow, and snowfall continues into May (sometimes June). Hence, you can book a trip from Thankgiving onward with complete confidence. Unlike the 'feast or famine' West Coast, snowfall happens frequently, so you're almost certain to get a couple of powder days if you stay for a week. The high elevation and dry alpine air also ensure superb snow quality. Alta's terrain is not quite as extensive or varied as some destination resorts, but Snowbird is right next door. The combination of the two is close to unbeatable. The only gripe: nightlife in Little Cottonwood Canyon is pretty dead. Even good restaurants are hard to find. However, if you are a serious skier, you are not going to care. You'll be too tired for nightlife. Leave that to the snow bunnies who book in Park City.

The most consistent and excellent snow and skiing in the United States. I don't hate boarder's, but I don't miss them, it adds to the "Skiing the way it used to be". Most of the best skiing requires a little effort and know-how to find, which also adds to the appeal. If you're a serious skier, and you had to be stuck at one resort for the rest of your skiing life, this would be a good place to be stuck.

So, it's not got a town, who needs that? When you have such wonderful snow and not adulterated by snowboarders. Friendly resort staff everywhere and I'll continue to return year on year as I have done for the past 12yrs.

One of the things that make Alta such an incredible ski area is that it doesn't give up its secrets easily. Which makes virtually every run a new adventure, no matter how many times you've hit it. In-bounds face shot capital of the world.
Among great skiers Alta is always rated the best. Best snow, best trails (there are few trails - you ski the mountain), best trees and tough. The only place Alta ranks low is the town - there is no town. You basically ski and go to bed.
Also, you fly into SLC which is always open. You then drive 45 minutes to the mountain.
