Ski Slovenia

Slovenia is a mountainous country in Central Europe and home to just over 50 small – medium sized ski areas including several of international significance in the Julian Alps.

The best known Slovenian resort, located within six kilometres (four miles) of both Austrian and Italian borders, is Kranjska Gora in the Zgornjesavska valley, one of the most picturesque Alpine valleys. Indeed a unique ‘3 Countries’ lift pass is available which includes Tarvisio in Italy and Gerlitzen in Austria.

It developed into a major tourist and sports region when the railway arrived in the 1870s, and is famed primarily for its World Cup competitions in Alpine skiing and ski flights on the giant ski-jump in Planica.

Another two of the major ski centres are centred on the town of Bled and nearby Lake Bohinj with its own beautiful old lakeside town of Bohinjska Bistrica. Here the ski centres of Kobla and Vogel welcome a large proportion of international guests with runs up to 6km long.

Also worthy of note is Bovec in the Soda Valley, with a three stage gondola up to the Kanin ski area on the Italian border – the only Slovenia ski resort where the pistes extend above 2000m.
