Ski Portugal
It comes as a surprise to many that you can indeed ski Portugal, at one location Serra da Estrela ski resort, located about 300km (190 miles) east of capital Lisbon and close to the Spanish border, the country’s highest point at 1967m.
Serra da Estrela was established in the early 1950s and although it has a small lift served vertical of less than 90m (300 feet), the enthusiastic Portugese have invested in modern lifts and created eight runs in all categories on the wide, treeless slopes, the longest a full kilometer descent.
Usual snow cover is reported to be surprisingly good but there’s also extensive snowmaking as back up, covering the entire terrain, so long as temperatures are low enough.
There is a mountain restaurant on site and a dozen hotels in the vicinity. The nearest rail station and domestic airport is at Covilhá, 29km (18 miles) away, with the closest international airport at Porto, 200km (125 miles) off. read more...
