WORLD SNOW ROUNDUP #267

Issued: 23rd November 2022 By Patrick "Snowhunter" Thorne Southern Hemisphere European Roundup North American Roundup Asia Roundup World Overview The ski season is really getting off to a great start across North America now with an estimated 100+ ski centres open at the weekend, thanks in large part to lots of early snowfall on the western side of the continent and finally low temperatures for snow-making in the east. But there’s also been snowfall there too now. It’s a somewhat less promising picture so far in Europe, although there have been the best snowfalls of the autumn so far reported for ski slopes across the continent and down to lower elevations. Even Portugal’s sole ski centre, Serra da Estrela, reported…

Late Spring Snowfall in Australia & New Zealand

There’s been more snowfall for Australia and New Zealand just over a week until the start of meteorological summertime there. In Australia, where the2022 ski season ended in early October, the latest snowfalls, although among the heaviest yet, follow a series of regular dumps that have continued over the past month. Ski areas including Falls Creek (pictured below on 22 November), Mt Hotham (above) and Perisher reported 25-30cm (10-12”) more snowfall in the past 24 hours. The snowfall is now delaying the start of some summer outdoor mountain activities. For New Zealand, where the last centre closed for 2022 about a month ago, it has been more snow flurries and a light covering in the past 24 hours.…

The long running saga of the funicular railway at Cairngorm ski area above Aviemore in Scotland is set to enter its latest phase with the railway line set to re-open on an as yet unknown date in early 2023, after four years out of action. Contractor Balfour Beatty is reported to be nearing completion of the programme of works required to strengthen the 2km long viaduct and the focus now turns to engineers from Swiss company Garaventa/Frey, who are installing a new control system to ensure safe operations once the funicular comes back into service. Over the coming weeks Garaventa/Frey will lay fibre optic cabling and test the system repeatedly in live conditions. This means that Cairngorm Mountain trains are…

French Resorts Push Back Season Opening Dates

The start of the French 22-23 ski season has been set back with Val Thorens, expected to be the first in the country to open, this coming weekend, announcing they’re delaying doing so by a week. “Despite our best efforts to start the season with you on November 19, the warm autumn weather does not allow us to open the ski resort and its slopes in a qualitative way. So, our teams, motivated and optimistic, have decided to push back the opening date. The snow cover on the tops is satisfactory but currently does not allow a return on skis to the village,” an online statement explains. There’s initially a one-week delay with the revised opening date the 26th.  …
