Youth Charity Snow-Camp Launch New 2019-20 Fundraising Challenge in Courmayeur

Snow-Camp, the UK’s only registered youth charity using snowsports to change the lives of inner-city youth, is launching a brand-new fundraising challenge, the ‘AJ Bell Courmayeur Classic’ this winter. Snow-Camp uses a combination of snowsports, life skills sessions, qualifications and vocational opportunities to support inner city young people. The charity's programmes enable young people to reflect on the key issues impacting their day-to-day lives, and help them develop new skills to support their futures. The challenge will take place at the Italian resort of Courmayeur from the 30th January to the 2nd of  February this winter. ‘Snow-Cannon’ on Saturn’s Moon Enceladus

Saturn’s moon Enceladus seems to be acting like a "snow-cannon," pumping water into Saturn's orbit and covering its neighbouring moons in snow, which has made them highly reflective, new research suggests. A team of researchers looked at 60 radar observations of Saturn's inner moons — Mimas, Enceladus and Tethys — made by NASA’s spacecraft Cassini, and found that the radar brightness of these moons is double that than previously thought. The researchers determined the extreme brightness is a result of ice and snow falling and coating their surfaces, which are not protected by any atmosphere, after it has been ejected by powerful geysers on Enceladus, in as process described in the report as being like a “giant snow cannon.” The…

Ski Touring By Boat in Norway’s Sunnmøre Alps

A company called Fjord Adventures which specialises in ski touring adventures bin Norway’s Sunnmøre Alps, has invested £500K in an “eco facelift” of the historic ship, HMS Gåssten, which they use as the base for their trips. After the darkest of winters, HMS Gåssten will begin a new ski touring programme from February 2020. There is a blanket ban on snowmobile and helicopter assisted access to the Sunnmøre Alps which provides those arriving by boat access to untracked powder perfection. The Off-Piste Awareness Tour 2019

Henry’s Avalanche Talk (HAT), which over recent years has become a leading source of advice on the dangers of avalanches and how to avoid them when heading off piste, is launching a tour of venues in the UK to give skiers and boarders the chance to gain valuable advice on saying safe in the mountain. The 2019 Off-Piste Awareness Tour will kick off next month and includes more than 30 live events in venues across the UK, along with several in  France. The talks focus on how to manage risk when skiing or snowboarding off-piste and are aimed at all levels of riders from off-piste first timers to experienced veterans looking to reinforce their knowledge. Three Alpine Glaciers Open in 24 Hours Following Heavy Snowfall

Three glacier ski areas have opened in Austria and Switzerland this weekend following the heavy snowfalls a week ago. The Stubai and Solden (above) glaciers in Austria opened for their 2019 - 20 seasons on Friday and were joined by Val Senales in Italy on Saturday.  All four areas reported at least 40cm of fresh snowfall in the past week, the Stubai (below) 55cm. Ski conditions were reported to be superb today with blue skies and fresh snow. They joined four currently open glacier areas in Austria, Italy, Norway and Switzerland to bring the total number of areas open in Europe and the northern hemisphere to seven, the most open since July. 4th Biggest French Ski Region Goes 100% Green-Energy Powered

Les Sybelles, one of the world's biggest ski areas (4th biggest in France) with more than 300km of slopes, nearly 150 runs and 70 ski lifts inter-connecting half-a-dozen resorts in the Maurienne region is the latest to announce that all of its electricity needs will be met by 100% renewable energy sources. From this winter 2019-20 the region will receive 100% certified renewable electricity from local hydro-electric centres, as well as solar and wind power source, for all lifts, snowmaking and other operations thanks to a partnership with power company EDF. New Ski Area Opening in Park City This Winter

What is being described by its creators as “America’s first all-in-one actions sports and ski resort” is due to open in November at a location in Park City, Utah, already home to the country’s largest ski area as well as Deer Valley ski area.
