Best mountain in Greece from Ski Greece Greece
Amazing scenery, friendly locals, and a lot of snow. You will rarely find queues, amazing playful off-piste routes through 30-meter tall trees, and crazy parties at the apres-ski areas. The general vibe of the resort is from another world. Food at the resort is poor but there are plenty of traditional tavernas in the surrounding picturesque villages. Go to "Mpatsilas" and prepare to be impressed. Unfortunately, the resort is understaffed and not adequately supported by the local municipality. With a little work, this place can become a world-class ski resort.

We have just spent 5 days here in Vasilitsa. Myself, my wife and our 4 year old son and 2 year old daughter. Here are our scores: Staff and resort personnel: 10/10 Conditions: 8/10 Infrastructure: 8/10 Ski school: 9/10 Ease of parking getting to and from the resort: 9/10 Cost: 9/10 Local villages and accommodation: 8/10 We stayed in the Pindos Palace Hotel, fantastic and great personal service. Great rooms, fantastic breakfast, super clean! For two days we were completely alone on the mountain. We were the only people in the resort (due to road blockades and general political unrest) and the staff were fantastic! They ran the whole infrastructure of the resort, even though we were the only two paying customers (our children did not pay). The snow coverage at the top of the resort was good, however, at the bottom, there was no snow. The staff assisted us in taking our children and our equipment to the higher part of the mountain where we spent the whole day with Vassilitsa our private playground. At the end of the day, the staff assisted once again in returning us all safely to the base. Every single staff member loves this mountain and seemed proud to assist us in any way they could. Considering they have no snow machines, the upper part of the mountain was in excellent condition with good snow and still some small off-piste possibilities. The lifts are quite quick, and over the weekend we were there, we never had to wait. The rental shop at the lower lift was excellent, and the lesson we booked for our son was of the highest order (thanks Michalis); we felt safe and confident in his abilities. For us to spend 5 days in Vasilitsa and ski for all 5 during a period of mediocre snow fall is amazing. On a previous trip to Austria we skied only 5 days out of 8. So we were very pleased. It is a beautiful mountain, with trees and amazing scenery. The surrounding villages in the Pindos Mountain range are good for exploring local tavernas and such. We can fully recommend this resort to all levels of skier or snowboarder, families or solo travellers. It might lack the big chalets and such of the other resorts, yet I believe, this is its charm. One of the best locations for snow sports in Greece where you are in touch with the mountain.

For a snowboarder, Vasilitsa is the most charming Greek resort. This is mostly because it offers many off-piste options, frequent powder and a truly stunning scenery. If you are up for hiking the options are increased even more (tree runs, hidden black diamonds and so on). Various obvious issues pertaining to Greek infrastructure remain: slow lifts, less than ideally groomed runs and so on. Still, the attitude of the staff is better than that in other resorts (esp. Parnassos and Helmos) and prices are fair. Food, in Samarina and Smiksi, is good though villages may have a certain derelict vibe to them.

If there is a wide terrain to ski in Greece this is it. Snow conditions are most certain here relative to all other Greek resorts, as it almost always dumps from Adriatic moist W or NW. Beautiful natural environment. Unfortunately, not many high steeps for skiers. Ideal for snowborders.

Probably the best snow center in north Greece (Falakro is the other). Good, lengthy runs. Some considerably faster lifts, nice views but rude people..big queues during the weekend, semi-working during the week provides only 3 out of 7 lifts.

The location of the resort of Vasilitsa is beautiful and usually, the snow is adequate. One serious drawback: the staff are clueless as far as running the resort is concerned. The lifts at Vasilitsa are poorly managed resulting in unbelievable queues during the weekends. Should you try to complain you'll receive apathy and rudeness. Much better off if you visit Mt Voras Kaimakstalan or Vermio (3-5 Pigadia).

A ski resort consists of three elements. The mountain, the infrastructure and the people. So, one at a time: 1. The mountain: Is wide spread for Greek standards, almost always providing some part with good visibility and nice snow, even if the rest of the mountain is icy, slushy, or buried in the mist. The location is fantastic, offering lots of runs under the tree line and a wide open treeless face under the top lift. Pistes are basic, offering a few options for beginners, and early intermediates. Experts should immediately head off-piste. Many obvious routes, and even more hidden, await the adventurous rider. Snowfalls at Vasilitsa can be very impressive, sometimes even causing “trouble” to the resort’s operating ability. What makes Vasilitsa the best [in my opinion] Greek resort, is the mountain’s “vibe”. Most of the riders are there just to ride, always willing to share riding knowledge with anyone willing to ask. This actually makes a difference, since in Greece 70% of ski resorts visitors, visit just to show off a new SUV, or a shining vinyl Mont Clair dawn jacket… 2. The infrastructure: Is basic and old. But, considering the day pass prices [10-13€] the deal is actually more than fair. Lifts are wisely placed, serving different sides off the mountain, offering different kind of terrain and even though they are slow and have small capacity, queues are not as long as in other Greek resorts [Helmos & Parnassos]. A few tiny chalets offer snacks at reasonable prices, and above all, the guys working there are nice, friendly and usually addicted riders themselves! Magnetic card lift passes came in 2008 as a pleasant surprise. A small snow park is usually there, designed and maintained by local crews, but wherever you look, you can see either something natural ready to be hit, or something being built from riders for riders, and that is really nice. What needs to be mentioned is the high quality of food, offered in the surrounding villages of Distrato & Samarina, in [surprisingly] reasonable prices. 3. The people People working in and around Vasilitsa are of course Greek, and this is “a priori” a significant disadvantage ad far as I am concerned. But, compared with the awful people in Helmos, and the blunt people in Parnassos, Vasilitsa has to offer something better. Maybe people working there are not 100% qualified and trained, but at least they are polite and probably try their best, even if sometimes their best is not good enough. Trust me, this is something! As a conclusion: I would strongly suggest a visit to Vasilitsa, especially for off-piste riders. The place is beautiful, the mountain has lots to offer, cost is fair, and the vibe is great. You will enjoy it, for sure.. PS If I was granted a snow wish, it would be that Vasilitsa ski resort soon becomes privatized..

A greek friend of mine, who lives near Grevena, suggested to take me to Vasilitsa in January. I did not know that skiing in Greece was possible and I was surprised how good it is! We had about 6 feet of snow and it was almost completely powder! Most lifts were operating an the Chalets were hostile. The view from the ski area was absolute magnificant, with a rugged scenery so that I almost felt like in the Alps. The ski runs were not really long but lots were quite steep. The only shame is that there is no real village at the foot of the mountain like in the Alps. What about joining Smixi to the ski area with a cable car?

Sorcerer from Ski Greece Greece
Having been to several resorts abroad, mostly Austrian, I feel sorry that such a mountain (Vasilitsa) remains in the hands of incapable, indifferent people, who should have given the management to the Austrians who had previously come with an ideal plan: cable car from Smixi upwards etc, etc, etc. But what can be done? I suppose I will continue to enjoy the wilderness and the steep slopes, though short, with my family. I hope something is done in the future...
