I have been skiing at Stubai glacier since 1999 including one full year living in nearby Neustift. It's one of my favourite ski areas.
The Stubai pistes are nearly always in perfect condition. They are neither over easy or challenging for the average skier. The lift system is excellent. The new 24 person gondola on the Eisgrat is great for moving you up the mountain at speed and in comfort.
For the past 2 years we have been taking our child to the ski school meeting at Gamsgarten. It's been a great place for him to learn to ski. Free kids passes extend right up to 10 years old.
Our favourite time to visit is mid-March when temperatures are a little warmer. The snow late season is also very reliable. The area doesn't attract many expert skiers, hence you will often find deep untracked powder long after snow has fallen. In a good season the off-piste opportunities to the side of the long Wilde Grub'n ski route back to the car park are also fantastic.
The only thing that I don't like is the quality of food at the mountain restaurants run by the lift company. The one other lunch choice is the Dresdner Hutte is a much better option.
Accommodation in Neustift is easy to find, lots of self catering apartments and hotels. This is one of the easiest resorts for a ski weekend from the UK when using nearby Innsbruck airport.
You will meet hardly any other British skiers here unless the British army are having one of their training (holiday) camps there at the same time.

I've skied Stubai on 3 sperate days in the past 12 months and have to say the place is epic! It's so much more than a glacier with 110 km of marked pistes, many of which are non glacial. The snow is always great from the Dresdener Hut upwards and Ski Route (Itinerary)14 to the bottom is magnificent.
For hard core skiers the off-piste is virtually unlimited, with further challenges for ski-touring and couloir thrill seekers. There are crevasses but in the core season these are no issue, however, off-piste is a no-no in the summer months.
For beginners the area around Gamsgarten is perfect with dry snow guaranteed throughout the winter and well into April.
Great choice of restaurants on the mountain with the Dresdener Hut being great value.
Apres-ski at Gamsgarten is incredible, especially when they open the roof and everybody starts dancing on the tables, before de-camping down to the Mutterberger Alm at the bottom for more of the same! Classic Austrian party time.
Mutterberger Alm is also a great 4 star hotel and very reasonably priced for ski in-ski out lovers.

Went to Stubai (Stubai Glacier) in December 2009 - had a really good day out. Beautiful drive up the valley, super efficient lift system to get the masses up and away. Huge, wide rolling blues, short steeps with some of the best mountain scenery I've ever seen. Long route ( 16 ? ) back to the carpark was a highlight - after a big dump would be absolutely mental. I enjoyed the packed powder off-piste, the quality mountain restaurants, helpful staff and oompah-techno as we had a drink before our bus left. It may seem a long way from Innsbruck but it's well worth the trip. Would like to go again.

I would definitely caution anyone thinking of skiing or snowboarding at this resort in summer.
On 9 August 1989, our son Duncan MacPherson rented snowboard, boots, and protective clothing from the ski operator; and took a two-hour private snowboarding lesson. Sometime between 14:30 hrs (when he was last observed) and 16:00 hrs (closing time), he broke through a snow bridge over an open crevasse on the Schaufelschuss piste, and was subsequently buried in the crevasse during grooming operations.
The ski operator, and police, said the rented equipment had been returned. They could provide no evidence to substaniate their claim.
Fourteen years later (18 July 2003), Duncan's body was found on the Schafelschuss piste, 35 meters east of the tow. The rented equipment was found with his body.
Police did not attend the death site; Four slope workers conducted unsupervised recovery of the body, contaminating the death scene, and destroying pertinent evidence (lift ticket, receipt for snowboard rental, serial number of snowboard, driver's license, car keys.)
To reconstruct the accident, police relied only on the speculation of three slope workers, all of whom blamed Duncan. According to these slope workers, Duncan climbed over a fence that supposedly secured the crevasse area. Evidence contradicts their theory. There was NO security fence in place on 9 August 1989.

Been there 7 times :)
Stubai Glacier is the best ski resort I've ever been at. Great snow, great weather, great people, great conditions. If you wanna ski or snowboard, this is the place to do it.
It is cold because it is winter :) But the temperatures are in the normal avareges for that height and season :)

The resort is great, beautiful scenery and comfy hotels. Skied here twice in November. Unfortunately, ski teams prepare here in early season and, in my experience, ski dangerously. My husband - very experienced skier - was airlifted to hospital this week after one of the slalom skiers smashed into him (then he and adult he was with skied on without stopping). We won’t come here again.
