Had a fantastic week in Obergurgl 15th to 21st March 2009 staying at chalet Alpenblume with Ski Esprit. Perfect location for families; we had a 6 and 8 year old who progressed very quickly on remarkably quiet pistes considering the perfect snow conditions. Some good blue runs difficult to get on in Hochgurgl due to the T-bars for the young ones.
The weather continued to be cold though for late March but the resort (Obergurgl) will keep well into April.

Just back from a family week in Gurgl (Obergurgl), and it snowed and snowed and snowed more. Pistes in first few days were great, best start to a season in 20 years apparently. Once it started snowing it was bye, bye pistes. Many under 8-10 inches of fresh powder that they just could not keep up with because no sooner had they tried than it fell again. Safest routes through the trees.
Best mountain retreat was without doubt Nederhuette; very slick operation, great staff and the apres-ski nights were packed, and this was a quiet week. It's also good value for evening food. Skiing down after a few lemonades is always fun and is an easy run back to the village. A skidoo or even pistenbully ride for those not too steady on the skis is available.
Good food at reasonable prices at the 'Romantica' pizzaria attached to the Hotel Madeline is worth checking out. Lastly hotel Schonblick was good, clean, warm and friendly.

I've been skiing for over 30 years and skied the majority of resorts in Austria and France but Obergurgl is in my top two. It doesn't have extensive skiing and it doesn't have a bustling night life (Nederhutte excluded) but it oozes charm and character. There is rarely a lift queue, there is always snow and there are few boarders. If you put your mind to it you could ski the entire resort from one end and back again in a day but the slopes will be quiet, well groomed and in excellent condition, with stunning views. The majority of the lifts are quite modern (compared to most French resorts) and most of the chairlifts are covered and often have heated seats for particularly cold days. My only moan about the lifts is the T-bar that services the red run at the far left side at Hochgurgl. It's a long drag, needs to be a chair really.
Off to Obergurgl again in a fortnight, can't wait.

Went skiing in Obergurgl/Hochgurgl between 6th and 13th December 2008. Restaurants, Niederhutte and David's Hut very good. The skiing is very good especially in Hochgurgl and the view from the top mountain star is amazing. Usual very friendly Austrians, can't do enough for you. I stayed at the Hochfirst in Obergurgl which is the best hotel I've ever stayed at in the Alps by a country mile. Great food, efficient staff, great facilities and easy access to the slopes. Lift queues, what lift queues? Would recommend this resort no problem.

Just got back from my 8th year of staying in Obergurgl. Snow was incredible, as always. There were only 2 cloudy days, the rest were amazingly clear and the temperature was around 15 degrees at times. The brilliant ski instructors kept my little brother working hard and skiing to the very best of his ability, while the snowboarding instructors had me working really hard to improve my skills, whilst having plenty of snowball fights! In previous years we have stayed at the hotel Edelweis and Gurgl and the hotel Jenewein. Both hotels ensured our stay was luxurious and stress free. We particularly enjoyed the Jenewein (5 years there). This year we tried something different, a self-service appartment called Villa Alpin. We were pleasantly surprised as we found ourselves able to relax and do what we wanted when we wanted to do it and with no set times for anything.
Overall, Obergurgl is an incredible place that makes you want to stay there forever and not able to wait to go back the next year!

Just returned from Obergurgl for the opening weekend. We were fairly apprehensive before we left as we saw there has been practically no snow.
All due respect to the staff at the resort though as the snow making machines were working overtime and they managed to open all the main lifts and over half the slopes.
Of course best of all, the slopes were practically empty - never once having to wait inline.

While I can't remember the exact figures, the lift capacity in Obergurgl is something like 10 times that of its maximum high-season population. This is completely intentional. You'll rarely find yourself in a queue.
Not to say the resort is quiet. The Nederhut is, hands down, one of the best ski-down mountain bars in the Alps. Excellent food, reasonable prices and, best of all - Rudy and Manny - the two piece apres-ski outfit that is guaranteed to entertain (just make sure you remember the show... if not, the skidoo will probably have taken you down to the village!)
Obergurgl is not known for the difficulty of its slopes but it has a micro-climate making it very reliable (it's one of Austria's highest parishes). The excellent lift system makes up for the lack of blacks, allowing an unprecedented number of speed-rides down the long, banking motorway slopes.
The hotels tend to be excellent and there are a few lively village bars. This tiny resort is a world away from the crowds in Solden, even if it is really just up the road. There is no better place to convert a new skier to Alpine ways. A great place to show someone who's done a few stints in the likes of Andorra or Bulgaria what skiing is really about.

First time in Obergurgl - 30th Dec.2006 to 6th Jan 2007. What a great resort - good skiing and plenty of snow unlike some others. Ski straight into the apres-ski bars Hexengurgl and Fassl. Hotel Madeleine; best we have stayed at - welcoming, excellent food, and superb roaring fire in the bar area. Everyone in Obergurgl was really friendly. No problems with lift queues. Firework display on New Years Eve was excellent to watch from the ski school meeting point with the hotels competing for the best display! Few more independent quality restaurants needed if you want a break from half board. Can we better this resort for New Year 2007???

Excellent resort which was celebrating its 50th birthday.
Friendly people.
Hotel Madeliene was the best. Excellent food and service. Staff couldn't do enough and special thanks to Agnes.
Ski runs to the village were good.
Convenient for everything with a compact village setting.
Nice bars. Awesome night at the Niederhutte Mountain Restaurant. Good food and service and excellent fun and entertainment. Best night for years, well recommended.
Vicky, ski rep for Crystal was the best ever. Professional, informative, hardworking. Couldn't do enough to make our holiday enjoyable. So a very special thanks to Vicky for all her hard work and commitment.
