Snowsure: 4.5

(1) Occasionally gets enough snow for skiing, (2) is often closed due to a lack of snow, (3) occasionally suffers from a lack of snow, (4) rarely suffers from a lack of snow, (5) Lech is snowsure even in the poorest seasons.

Variety of pistes: 4.1

We visited in March of 2003. We stayed at the Kristiania. It's a great hotel. Great rooms, food and staff. Lech is in a beautiful setting and the skiing is superb. Hire a guide and go off piste. There's something for everyone in Lech. Beware, it is expensive.

Lech and Zurs are fantastic places for snowboarding. Just got back from an Easter trip and the conditions were still excellent, our visit preceded by fresh dump. Dont be put off by people who say it is expensive - prices were about average in our experience but whatever and wherever you spend your cash, you will get excellent quality in clean and very friendly places. Most of the slopes face south and can become a bit slushy late in the day at this time of year, but stay up high at the back of Zurs and there is some great terrain, natural gullys and impressive bowls. Anyone considering venturing into the acres of offpiste terrain should seriously consider taking beacons, shovels and probes and stick together. Avalaunche potential seemed very high.

Lech is a top class resort both on and off the slopes. The village is lovely to wander around although very expensive! The whole area is just great though and it usually gets good snow - I went in April 2006 and there was tonnes of the stuff. There are plenty of lifts and the slopes are suitable for most abilities although maybe not for the very first timer. Oberlech is a village a bit up the mountain which provides a nice atmosphere and many restaurants.

Skied Lech/Zurs for variety during a trip to Ischgl. I didn't spend much time there, so take my impressions for what they are worth. My impression of Lech was that it is a tony, high-end ski area that is perfect for families and casual skiers, but not so exciting for serious skiers. For starters, there were very few tough slopes considering the vast expanse of the Arlberg region. Also, I was dismayed to find that all of the forested areas at the bottom of the slopes were off limits (They sported signs saying "It is your forest too." If that's the case, why can't I ski it? I have a hard time understanding why skiing through a forest covered with 5 feet of snow is more environmentally harmful that skiing over alpine tundra higher on the mountain!) When we skied Lech, it was a cloudy day, so we were basically stuck skiing boring, overly crowded groomed pistes when we could be sure that our next turn was not our last. Unfortunately, that is par for the course in Europe since the tree line is so low.

I have gone to a lot of ski-resorts in Europe but Lech and Zurs are probably the best. I recommend them for the type of snow on the pistes and also outside the pistes. Except from ski and snowboard, Lech and Zurs have good night-life and also very nice restaurants. I hope next year to go there again.

Just back from a week's skiing in Lech and very please with my first visit to the Arlberg region. I found Pension Alpenfluh online and was slightly worried that I could not find any information on it (in English at least!) but with Lech being famous for it's 5* hotels I thought it could not be too bad, after all the website looked good. I dealt with the manager/owner Mirjam over e-mail, who was very helpful and friendly when booking. Booked our flights via EasyJet to Innsbruck and a transfer via minibus through alletransfers who turned out to be excellent. Upon arrival we were checked in swiftly and were shown to our rooms. We chose two of their apartments for a bit more space and these would certainly suit a family. The rooms were very clean and in good order. Nice bath/shower facilities and plenty of wardrobe space. Watch the wardrobe doors, they have a habit of catching your fingers. The board basis is half-board with breakfast and a four course evening meal, drinks not included. The restaurant was cosy and perfect for a relaxing meal after a hard day's skiing. The food was superb and can honestly say we did not have one bad meal. The service is attentive but not stuffy. The staff really do look after you. Mirjam floats around to check on everyone and you really feel at home. You keep your same table all week which was just fine. The breakfast in the morning was excellent as well with a choice of cereals, fruits and breads. You are also offered omelettes etc. They really try to find something for everyone. Once again the service and friendly approach really shone through. In the evening you can spoil yourself in the spa facilities, these were really good and the pictures just don't do them justice. You get robes and towels when you get in and you can get changed there. Remember, this is Europe and swimming suits are frowned upon. Almost everyone was naked! Still they were happy for us to wear towels, pruddy Brits do it again, he-he. The steam room/sauna and wellness room really brought those tied muscles back to life :-) This place really suits families and couples looking for a romantic get away. The prices are a bit more than some resorts but certainly comparable to a trip to the US and the snow record here is really good. If you are looking for some après then there is a great bar near the main lift set back from the road, Mirjam will direct you. There is some action after you come off the slopes but this does die down around 18:00. If you are looking for some serious partying then you may be best off in St Anton, which of course you can get to easily enough. In fact we skied the who area and really enjoyed all of the skiing. I would say it's more geared up for intermediates and above. We found St Anton no harder than Lech. Lift queues were small and slopes, mostly uncluttered. The Pension is ski in/out with only a few steps up to the lift. The town itself is down the hill a little way, about five minutes, which we did not mind. Over all, I would recommend this Pension and destination, you won't be disappointed and don't be put off by the reports of it being expensive. We found the value was excellent certainly comparable to some French resorts / Tignes / Les Arcs etc. I had a burger and chips on the mountain for 12 Euros and it was amazing, so much better than the rubbish I've been served in the past. You can get soups and other bits from 7 Euros, I would say. Beer's not too bad either, 4 Euros I think. Enjoy!

Lech is a beautiful resort which has great facilities for kids, lots of blue runs for intermediates, and also has some challenging ski routes dropping off Rüfikopf - although you may want to consider a guide or enlisting a local to show you the way. While the nightlife at Lech is quiet, the cafes and restaurants are great and you'll want an early night to enjoy the mountains in any case. I'm lucky enough to be at Lech most weekends.

I agree with another reviewer. Service quality in Zurs-Lech is not as it used to be. In our case, the attitude of the person in charge of the restaurant at the top of the Zursersee was extremely disgusting and unfriendly from the first moment. In addition to that, he made us wait a long time when paying. While he was sitting and having fun with his friends. Will not go back.

Getting ready for my 5th trip back to Oberlech (Lech). There really isn't any better place for me. I stay at Pension Sabine where the gracious Reischl family treats me like an old friend or member of the family. Great ambience and delicious food. The Slopes at Lech are rarely crowded and for an early morning skier, like myself, you often have the entire run to yourself; Nice :) The ski-in and ski-out at Sabine's has spoiled me for any other resort.

Good slopes. However, the overall attitude and unfriendliness is to the point of being disgusting. On a day to day basis I faced unfriendly waiters and personnel. Only for the rich who like an unfriendly attitude. The village of Lech is a representation of everything that went wrong with the ski-sport.
