We went to Myoko for the snow and we got the snow!
We went to Myoko for the snow and we got the snow! Loved the long ski runs at Suginohara and skiied there 3 days. Also skied one day each at Ikenotaura Onsen and Seki Onsen. Low visibility killed us! Be prepared to ski in low cloud and less groomed tracks.
Lime Resort Onsen was fantastic.
Local restaurants (Chinese, Japanese and Greek) were great food and value for money.

Myoko Kogen is a great destination for a ski holiday, it is close to the train line, it offers a range of different ski locations within half an hour of the resort all accessible by bus or taxi. The ski lift tickets are very affordable. Myoko Kogen is a traditional Japanese Resort offering Onsens, traditional Japanese food, Ryokan accommodation as well as Western food and accommodation. The town is only 32 km from Nagano, where the Winter Olympics were held and it takes approx. 2 1/2 hours by train from Tokyo.

Akakura Onsen is a nice small village with plenty of restaurants and hotels. Some were closed due to the small amount of visitors, but as there was so much snow it was nice to have space everywhere. Good variety of foods, and a few bars. Make sure your lodge has transportation when the shuttle buses don't drive around the resorts (like this month, which made traveling around harder unless you have 4-wheel drive AND snow tires).

We loved the comfy beds and shared lounge, bar & dining area, the hot tub after being out in the snow all day and the freshly prepared breakfast and dinner. Fabulous vegan and vegetarian options and western friendly. Wonderful owners who made us feel so welcome from the start. Felt like a home stay and we could’ve stayed for longer! Great local recommendations and activities close by.
Thank you Chereyne & Brett - the super hosts! :)

On a scale out of 10 would rate Myoko about a 6.
On a scale out of 10 would rate Myoko about a 6. The mountain infrastructure is very old and tired which accounts for the low cost of lift tickets. The mountain lacks steepness.
Besides the many small restaurants it lacks a village atmosphere.
The mountain geography doesn't support advanced skiers.
It is not clearly sign posted for runs which also makes it difficult.
We found Japan much more expensive than what it was 5-6 years ago and would probably go back to Canada for more value.

Gorgeous quaint Japanese village with authentic restaurants, amazing snow and ski resorts very close by. Very friendly locals, who go out of their way to help you, even with language barriers. Fantastic place to visit for snow sports, lift tickets are incredibly cheap compared to Australia - around $40-50 per day depending on discounts through accommodation, etc. Great place to visit!
Great facility! Hosts were fantastic, and their hospitality was absolutely off the chart!!
We were there during fall, and went for a hike up to the falls. Beautiful little area of Japan. I have been to MyokoKogen a few times for skiing, but this was the first time I've gone during the fall season.
Sleeping on futon was great! Other guests were extremely respectful of quiet times. Dinner was AMAZING. Definitely sign up for dinner if you want to enjoy some great regional foods: Nodoguru and Tempura Shiroko were excellent.
* large room with separate bedroom and tatami parts
* good location close to shopping street, about 10-15 minutes walk to Yodel Ski Lifts, and 5 minutes to Kumado lifts
* very friendly and helpful staff, who kindly picked me up and drove me back to Myoko Kogen station
* discount tickets available at the front desk (ski rental, lifts)
* drying toom for ski equipment
* the room was quite cold, but the electric heater I received at the front helped a lot
* the story and paintings of Hatsuno Goto, hotel owner's relative
The Onsen on site was so amazing after a day of skiing at one of the Myoko resorts, the massage chair was a nice bonus. The private Onsen you’re able to book for 1 hour was such a luxury!
They offer a free shuttle to and from various resorts in Myoko which made things very easy.
The staff was so lovely and even went above and beyond to send me a very sentimental piece of jewelry to my next hotel in Tokyo after I left it there. Would recommend to any of my friends who will visit Myoko.
Myoko Forest Lodge is a fantastic place to stay for your next ski or snowboarding holiday in Japan.
From the moment we arrived we felt welcome by our hosts Cheryene and Brett. The lounge and dining areas are light and airy with a roaring fireplace and lovely furnishings.
The accommodation is excellent with an extremely comfortable king sized bed and ensuite
And after skiing each day we loved having our own private Onsen experience in the on-site Ofuroya.
AMAZING!
Traditional Japanese place with big rooms (we were 4 adults and we were perfectly comfortable). Bathrooms are shared but very clean. Ai (the host) was super nice and we had a great time. The position is perfect, the place is 1 min away from the ski rental shop and 5 min from the slopes. All the bars and restaurants are less than 5 min walk.
If I come back I would stay here again. I totally recommend it.
It seems like a family run hotel, Miwa, the hostess is fabulous. Really friendly, really helpful. The Japanese breakfast was excellent, although common theme it was different every day, and she explained what I was eating. Best miso soup I’ve ever had, everyday, and each day different. They also run a restaurant with great food and a “creperie” that serves 50 different flavours in the crepes, they are fabulous
Papa was amazing! He provided transportation to and from the ski resorts (Suginohara and Akakura) was there on time each and every day and took me to town to pick up supplies and food. I felt like part of the family and and Mama is an absolutely amazing cook. There kindness and goodwill exemplifies true Japanese tradition and sincerity! Thank you for your beautiful Hearts Moma and Papa!
It is a wonderful experience to stay in this hotel. The people who work in this hotel are very kind. They always try their best to help you to not only stay in the hotel, but also help you to go to supermarket, ski park and railway stations. You can feel free to use hotel's kitchen and dining room. If you like the customized service, this hotel would be a best choice in Myoko.
Hot Breakfast changes day by day, free shuttle from and to myoko station + free shuttle (drop off early morning and pick up during afternoon) to main ski resorts, main lobby is super confy to take some drinks and enjoy the winter la landscape. Nathan is a bit rude on his manners but dont get scared, his very helpful and good host!
The staff is really nice and helpful, to the point of "rescuing" me when I skied down to a place that was closed and I was going to have to take a taxi back to the hotel but they were kind enough to pick me up.
The place is really pleasant and small. Rooms are big. There are two private onsens, so that is really cool.
Location was fabulous, views were stunning. Easy hotel shuttle ride to/from Myokokogen station. Lovely free drinks at happy hour(s) every afternoon. Wonderful indoor and outdoor hot spring baths. I painted outdoors when it was sunny, and indoors when cold, snowy/rainy. JonBradham.com
This hotel is exceptional. The staff went well beyond for an english speaking guest. They assisted with dinner reservations and train tickets. The hotel collected us from the train station and returned us to the station when they had just had 40 cms of snow!
The location was perfect for ski in/out for suginohara runs for our family of 4. The meals provided at the hotel were lovely and really great portions. The family running the hotel was great, so helpful. Thanks for a lovely stay, we hope to return.
Shun and Takako were the kindest and most gracious hosts. Going out of their way to help us ski right up until our last minute of time in Myoko Kogen. Breakfast was always great and love the rides to the ski hill and back every day !
The staff are helpful and nice 👍

Great location. Close to everything in Myoko. Miwa the owner is very nice and helped us a lot with local tips. Everything is clean in the hotel. Good drying room for winter gear.
