I stayed in Sounkyo from 8-11th March 2024. Sounkyo is a very picturesque small town. There are Sika deer that come into the town center to eat! The Sounkyo Gorge is impressive with mount Kurodake toweing over the Gorge.
Take the Daisetsuzan Sōunkyō Kurodake Ropeway and on a good day you can see a 360 degree panorama of the Daisetuzan mountain range.
There is a very good Visitors Center in Sounkyo with very friendly and helpful staff. One of the staff took me on a walk through the deep new powder snow which had fallen the night before. The lady took me just because she loved that area and was pleased I was interested in finding walks to explore.
I would love to come here again in the summer and Autumn to see the changing seasons.

Beautiful scenery.
Beautiful scenery. Loved Daisetsuzan mountains: appropriately named: “playground of the gods”. Great choice of onsen spas. Delicious food (at the hotels we visited! Cannot comment for places we did not stay at!).

It is considerably quieter around here than other more congested onsen spots across Hokkaido. The luscious green summer views are fantastic. Self-drive is recommended for the convenience of moving around the small town.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The place was very cute and cozy, and my room was spacious. Laundry was inexpensive, and the location wasn't too far from the little town. It was right next to two bigger hotels with day-use onsen for a very reasonable price (pick up discount coupons from reception). One had a nice bakery/cafe that I went to for breakfast. I wish I had tried the hostel's curry for dinner, as dining options in the little town were pretty limited and most restaurants were closed.
View out the hotel window was amazing, had the sound of the river flowing and full view of it.
Buffet spread for dinner was great, amazing egg mayo and variety was huge.
Breakfast was a little less wonderful but still has enough variety to make it all good.
Facilities were decent and more traditional old school style but still felt very clean and proper.
I love onsen!
Large outdoor bath is huge with good view. Mixed bath that we can spend time together with our family. Though the hotel is not new but well maintained facilities and clean. Breakfast is good with various kinds of food. A Thai staff at the front desk is lovely with good service mind. Hotel offers the shuttle bus back to Asahikawa station. Very nice!!!
Good location and cheap. I was on a cycling trip and didn’t want to have to travel farther than Sounkyo Onsen. All the nicer hotels were booked. So I booked here but then paid for a day pass to use the Onsen at one of the nicer hotels. Room was comfortable and had a nice view of the River. Room was spacious. Staff was nice.
Great location with mountain and river views from the beautiful room. The hotel is dated, but clean and well kept. The onsen is okay, but one side is definitely better than the other. Luckily it switches every day. Outside there are two small baths which are nice and the large bath inside is average.
Not much, do not stay here. I’m perplexed by the good reviews on booking.com. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere and is a one star anywhere else in the world. If this is a three star please show me what a one star looks like!!
Food was very good at breakfast and dinner. Having ur own bbq was superb. We were also upgraded half way through our stay as was my partners birthday. Staff could not do enough for us. Absolutely fabulous hotel!!!
Outdoor Onsen was beautiful. Staff was nice, speaks English and French. There was a cafe in the hotel that does very good cappuccino. Breakfast and dinner buffet were both good. 5 mins walk to cable car station.
friendly staff, great Japanese style experience. Confortable room. Great food. Loved the Japanese Yukata that was available in the room. Great Onsen. Beautiful hotel.
Attention to details. Great service.
The hotel is much better than it appears at first glance. Helpful staff, good onsen, clean rooms and excellent restaurant buffet. Somewhat tired facilities but very good value for money.
Room had beautiful view. The outdoor onsen was amazing morning and night, I didn't feel cold even with snow falling and -7°C! Buffet food was decent for hotel standards.
The breakfast was very good, and I really enjoyed the location of this hotel! The room was also very clean, if I was in the area, I would stay here again!
