While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter...
While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter Olympics host city and a favourite place for people to ski in Winter, it is also the site of the Zenkō-ji Temple.
As one of the most important Buddhist sites in Japan it is extensive and beautifully landscaped. Despite the large number of visitors we felt calmed each of the times we walked through the grounds. You can also purchase a ticket (¥1,200) to climb the Niōmon Gate, visit the main Hondo and walk through the dark tunnel, turn the giant storehouse that contains a complete set of sutras, and see the museum in the war memorial pagoda at the rear of the complex.
Nagano itself is a nice prefectural capital surrounded by forested mountains. In the good late autumn weather it was beautiful and we enjoyed wandering the small streets finding little restaurants and stores, and looking at the interesting mix of old and very new architecture.
We didn't visit any of the popular museums and galleries as after almost 4 weeks in Japan we were "museumed out", but did stumble across the Nishinomon-Yoshinoya Sake Brewery which is well worth a visit, and had lunch at Unaginoyado Sumiyoshi - a well-regarded unagi restaurant.
There are also lots of scenic and nature locations to visit in the surrounding hills, but you need more time than we had to enjoy them.
Overall, Nagano was a bit of a surprise package and being just 1½ hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen I would recommend a visit as part of any Japan itinerary.

Handly location to use as a base for surrounding areas like Matsumoto and Obuse. Just be aware the train to Obuse is not on the JR or the IC/Suica/Pasmo and you'd need cash to buy the ticket.

Many different activities available in the area - cultural, historical, and natural. The Togakushi Shrine Pilgrimage and Kamikochi National Park were my favorites. Excellent souvenir shopping on the street in front of Zenkoji Temple. The city is very walkable. The train from Tokyo provides easy access. During hot summer months it is cooler in Nagano.

The tour of the Zenko-Ji Temple was very good.
The tour of the Zenko-Ji Temple was very good. Very beautiful!
The visit to the park with snow monkeys was great. I’m glad I booked a tour for this instead of doing it by public transportation. I loved seeing the snow monkeys.
The kindest host, Maki-san. The most delicious food I have had in Japan. Lovely ryokan home. Incredible hospitality. Just 10 out of 10. The Togakushi shrines are right nearby. Seriously, the food alone and the relaxing Onsen were so delightful. Thank you, Maki-san. (For non-Japanese, be sure to understand a little about how ryokan works and what the traditional inn is like. But Maki-san will teach you all you need to know!
Really good size room with a lovely big bed that we haven't found in many of our Japanese hotel stays - so definitely appreciated the space :) breakfast was amazing, incredible view of the city and mountains with a lovely selection of breakfast food, drink, and desserts! Lovely staff, and good location (10min walk from station) with nice shops and food market. 10/10 and would definitely love to stay again as very affordable.
Fantastic location, close to Nagano Station and shopping areas. A pleasant walk to Zenkoji temple. Quite a large room for Japanese standards, suitable size for a family of 4. Well appointed, full kitchen, decent sized fridge, microwave etc. Great shower and water pressure. A very quiet room with minimal road noise heard. A quiet complex of 5 apartments only.. Netflix provided.
This hotel is perfectly situated close to the station and near eateries. We got in late with heavy bags so it was a relief to only have to walk a couple of minutes from the station to the hotel.
Breakfast is generous with breads and fruit and yogurt as well as a full Japanese selection of rice and noodles, fish, sausage and bacon.
The family who ran the hotel made it. They were so sweet and couldn't do enough.
The hotel is very central, clean and perfect to walk to local sights or the station.
We choose the option to have breakfast, worth a try experiencing traditional Japanese food.
The onsen is amazing, make sure you use the cold water tap at its warm!
Good Japanese breakfast that we were happy to pay for. Little but clean room walking distance from the main train station. Quiet, clean place. We were all energized the next day and walked to the Zenkoji Temple which was the highlight of our one day visit before the start of our Nakasendo Trail walk
Hotel is just a little walk away from train station. You can walk to temple and restaurant from there. Hotel provides a lot of amenities like tooth brush, shavor, face masks, shampoo, selection of different pillows etc.
Rooms are not too spacious but big enough to open a big suitcase.
Hotel room was huge compared to other rooms in japan. We were put on the 14th floor with beautiful views of the city and mountains. Staff was wonderful, and the restaurant had above average wood fire pizza. About a 15 minute walk to nagano station.
just minutes walk from Nagano train station. Lots of food options nearby and shopping. Onsen was great and rooms we exceptional. Note: no tattoos allowed in this onsen. Bonus, the hotel water is alkalized! highly recommend.
The location is very near the Nagano train station. It was an easy walk to the Zenkoji temple too.
The room was spacious, bigger than the 4 star hotel we stayed in Tokyo .
Breakfast is good too.
The hotel is located at the city center and is close to the main station, which is convenient. The hotel also offers varies of amenities that we can use, including bath powder for relaxation.
Location adjacent to Train Station very convenient. Good shopping, restaurant and sightseeing options all nearby. Breakfast in hotel very good. Excellent value. Friendly staff.
great location, not far from Nagano station
rooms very spacious for Japanese standards
option to opt out of daily cleaning
microwave and washing machine facilities
Super close to Nagano train station. Makes your stay very easy and comfortable. Also has a plethora of restaurants in the streets/ alley ways behind the hotel.
The location is superb; close to Nagano station and in front of the main entertaining area of the city. Easy to understand system and convenient service.
