We would definitely go back. Just around an hour by Shinkansen from Tokyo, Karuizawa is the perfect place if you want the laid-back, nature-embraced, old-town feel. Just strolling around town is cool enough but they have a lot of museums and galleries too, that the whole family enjoyed! Also got to try skiing for the first time. Overall, this is one place that we will always be included if we go in the Tokyo area again in the future.

A wonderful destination if you like fresh mountain air, lovely tree-lined roads, cycling, etc. Many useful bus routes and also Shinano Railway next to the Shinkansen that goes to Naka-Karuizawa and way beyond. Note that many restaurants close early, especially out of season. Many well-known restaurants need a booking.

Should spend more days in Karuizawa town.
Should spend more days in Karuizawa town. There is a Skiing sport just beside the Prince town outlets and worth for beginner to try and have fun. Walking distance to the old town bring different experiences and its very nice to try walk around and try the foods there. Its worth to go for a relax place. If more days , can travel down to the other town in Karuizawa for skiing and sight seeing. Awesome place to explore.

A European town in a forested mountainous region not far from Kusatsu, Shima onsen, or Tokyo.
The hot springs aren’t anything special but the mountainous scenery and delicious French/Italian food can be a nice change from the usual Tokyo bustle.
Autumn colours are nice, especially just north towards mount Asama.

Nice “garden” style hotel. Old but has been refreshed.
Nice “garden” style hotel. Old but has been refreshed. Like the “Club” room with free drinks (not beer) and games. Large rooms. Breakfast not buffet but “set,” and good enough. Not easy to spot entrance off the main road.

Karuizawa is a lovely small town.
Karuizawa is a lovely small town. The heritage trail up the Usui Pass was a great hike and offered beautiful views of Mountains, especially Mt Asama.
The outlet plaza was great if you want to shop for premium brands. The Ageing Beef restaurant served great beef in a variety of cuts. Expensive but delicious.
We loved everything!! If you’re traveling by car, this is the place for you. The location is close to all the little attractions and they offer free parking. There is a private onsen (2 of them, actually) that we absolutely loved! The rooms are spacious, extremely clean, and they have floor heating. I would say the best part of the stay was the host, who was incredibly welcoming and friendly (even though our Japanese was very very limited). Don’t forget to get the breakfast option, I promise you will not regret it :)
Beautiful place. The moment you arrive at the hotel you feel a blanket of peace and tranquility coming over you. The staff provided amazing service and speaks well English to explain the necessary items + how to use the onsen.
The room is spacious, clean, and has a beautiful view on the small river. Beautiful bathroom as well and the bed sleeps amazing!
The highlight was the onsen, our first time to do this and we couldn’t pick a better location for this!
The breakfast was world class!
The best place we stayed at in Japan. Judy and Brad were so welcoming, so much fun to talk to and full of information about the area, region and, indeed, Japan in general. The bar and restaurant clearly a reflection of the personality and interests of hotel owner Chris, making a fantastic change from the soulless hotels we had been staying in up until then. Dinner and breakfast were great, tasty and just the right size portions. Beautiful location with lots to do in the local area.
We spent two nights in Hotel Tsuruya and we had very pleasant time, especially my 4.5 year old boy. The staffs were very warm and helpful. The room and onsen place were tidy and clean. My boy loves futon and the Japanese breakfast especially the rice and miso soup. Although this hotel is not that close to the train station, we had fabulous walking time, stomping on the snows and chasing around before and after dinner.
1. Great location! Bus stop is literally right outside the hotel. Bus around Karuizawa tourist spots are outside. It is also literally at the entrance of the old Ginza street which has great snacks. If needed, the hotel can also drive 5 mins to the Karuizawa station where you can do all the shopping at the outlet.
2. Great staff. Very polite and very helpful
3. Good breakfast.
4. Comfortable bath area at basement.
Reasonable business hotel!
The rooms are clean and bathroom is big enough. I needed a cheap accomodation for one night in Karuizawa, and it was very good. Breakfast is ok too. Staff was very kind and welcoming. Check-in was fast and efficient!
I walked from Karuizawa station, 20-25min depending on your walking pace.
The room is huge and very comfy cottage style.
They have a cozy restaurant. We only had breakfast there, and their homemade ham was awesome. We should have had booked dinner there also.
The hotel has a list of nice restaurants around the area, and the staffs were very helpful in booking the restaurants.
Clean and spacious. Free parking. Great location, very near to the Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza. Good value for money especially for a weekend stay in Karuizama. A small corner with microwave provided and we could comfortably have our breakfast (bought from nearby convenience store) here.
Yusuke is a fantastic host with good English speaking ability
traditional Japanese house experience
good location, close to town but still very quiet
very close to an onsen that you can get a discount for
Hotel is a mix between Japanese and western style, like most of Karuizawa actually. Good location in the center of the town. They have rooms suitable for families, ours had two bunk beds for instance.
The location is good, just 5 minutes from train station! The room is relatively bigger than the similar hotel of same ranking. The toilet is big and have shower area besides the bath tub.
Enjoyed the cottages with my family. The location is really good, close to the station, outlet and ski resort. We appreciate the shuttle buses the hotel provided to go around places.
Staff is very friendly, location is convenient (1km from NakaKaruizawa station, nice restaurants 5 mins walk, close to main road, free parking. Onsen is small but nice and clean.
The location was good. It is close to the old street area. The onsen was nice as an added bonus and much more up to date than the hotel rooms. The interior garden is pretty.
The hotel was lovely and we were received warmly by reception staff. Our room was spacious and breakfast was delicious. Shuttle service to Karuizawa station was provided.
