Vogel summary

Mt Vogel (1922m) is the first mountain barrier above the Adriatic Sea, so more snow tends to falls here than anywhere else of similar altitude in the Alps. It is a high mountain setting and there are extraordinary panoramas over the surrounding area. The resort lies in Triglav National Park above Lake Bohinj, giving Vogel a special attraction. There are well-groomed trails suitable for all abilities. In good conditions there is excellent off-piste skiing. A single Julian Alps pass can be purchased to cover Straža, Vogel, Kobla, Krvavec, Kranjska Gora, Stari vrh and Soriška planina.

The first time we went to Vogel in February 2007 we loved it - good snow, few queues, friendly people. The second time we went in February 2008 unfortunately it was a holiday week in Slovenia and it was packed out. Despite the fact that from our hotel you had to take the ski bus to the gondola (the bust takes about 20 mins and runs every hour) the first time we loved the peace and quiet, however, the second time we would have to queue abuot 30 mins just to get to the slopes and then every lift had a massive queue. On the last day we did not even attempt to get to the gondola as the traffic queue for the car park was over 2km long!! The snow was excellent, but after a couple of hours of masses of people it turned into a bit of a mess. This resort is perfect for beginners but make sure you do not coincide with a national holiday week as you will have the whole of Ljubljana trying to get into the gondola. If you get your dates right though it really is paradise.
