  As an experienced cross country skier I really enjoyed Ruka in January.
  The skiing was limited to about 70km of tracks, but these took you over three beautiful fells, so I was quite happy to ski them all in both directions.
  The tracks were well groomed for both classic and skating, but too demanding for the not-quite-novices in our group.
  (complete novices are well looked after by the ski school - but once you've got the basics you want to get out there exploring, and this was quite hard, with most routes including red or black sections).
  The countryside at Ruka is beautiful and the colours of the arctic sky inspiring.
  The downhill slopes were very well groomed, and I was able to ski some of the blue runs on my cross country gear.

  Cross-country: 3.0 (1) There is nowhere to go for cross-country skiing around Ruka, (3) there are some cross country trails available, (5) the area features many spectacular and well maintained cross-country trails.	Luge/Toboggan: 1.0 (1) No designated luge or toboggan runs, (3) there are toboggan runs that open quite often, (5) Ruka has long and well maintained luge / toboggan facilities suitable for all ages.
  Mountain Dining: 3.0 (1) Nowhere to buy food by the pistes, (3) some places to eat up on the mountain but they are often busy and expensive, (5) there is a variety of excellent mountain eateries right next to the slopes to suit all budgets.	Eating: 3.0 (1) Bring your own food, there isn't even a shop. (5) A wide variety of places to eat and drink in the resort, from fast food to fancy restaurants.
  Apres-Ski: 3.0 (1) Nothing to do, not even a bar, (3) there are a few bars in the resort but nothing special, (5) clubs and bars stay open until very late and have a friendly atmosphere.	Other Sports: 3.0 (1) No sports facilities at all apart from ski lifts, (3) resort has just a small public swimming pool, (5) resort has all kinds of sports facilities, including a full-size swimming pool.
  Entertainment: 3.0 (1) Besides the snow and walking there is nothing to do here, (3) the non-skier will find things to do for few days but may become bored after a week, (5) the resort area is a fascinating place to visit, regardless of winter sports.	Winter Walks: 3.7 (1) Very limited walking and no snowshoe trails, (3) a couple of designated scenic walking/snowshoe trails, (5) extensive and diverse winter walking trails for all abilities.
  Ski Pass Value: 2.7 (1) A 1 week ski pass is overpriced compared to the number of lifts available, (3) the ski pass is averagely priced and covers a reasonable number of lifts, (5) ski passes are excellent value for money and cover a lot of lifts spanning a big area.	Value (National): 2.0 (1) Overall, Ruka is one of the most expensive ski resorts in the country and not worth the money, (3) overall represents average value for money, (5) overall offers the best value resort in the country.
  Value (Global): 3.3 (1) Overall, Ruka is one of the most expensive ski resorts in the world, (3) overall it offers pretty average value for money compared to resorts from other countries, (5) internationally the resort offers excellent value for money.

  Just got back from Ruka and had a great time. Loads of snow and could not ask for better conditions but a bit cold at times. Stayed in the Ruka apartments which were very nice and clean and only about 100m away from the lifts. The kids loved it all. The ski-hire was free and really good for beginners. Fantastic place.

  Just got back from Ruka on Jan 20th 2008, I have never seen snow like it, constant snow 24 hours a day and for the 7 days we were there. I think we were lucky with the temp too, coldest it got was -10.
  Perfectly groomed pistes, quite varied for beginners and intermediates. Only issue, certain lifts would often be closed for no apparent reason other than energy saving as we were told.
  Fantastic place, will book again for next year!!

  Have to agree with Neil on the cold factor. Jan was -33 all week. Then again you are near the Arctic circle so I guess we should have expected the cold.

  The runs are limited although perfectly groomed and some challenging reds and blacks. Boy do they know how to look after the runs with snow making all day every day. All groomed again ready to play for the next day too so its like constant dusting of pow.

  I love the Scandinavian board parks with many visits to Hemsedal(Norway) but gotta say that the park in Ruka was brilliant with kickers of all sizes up to the booter for the big boys. They had a good selection of rails too which is all good. The pipe was being shaped as we left but looked a good 100m long with pretty high walls....will have to go later in the year next time if not for the warmth then at least the pipe will be open. The big plus is that the park is floodlit all day so when it starts to get dark it is wicked to ride in. You can see every bump(although not many) on the run in to the kickers.

  Overall I would say it is well worth a trip if you have not been to Finland before. Cold but if you wrap up warm who cares about that.

  Oh.........And the scenery is amazing.

  This is a snowsure resort...but along with the snow comes the cold

  I was there in Jan this year and it was 20/32 most of the week!! So make sure that you take extra clothing.

  They have quite a good snowpark with some big kickers. The runs are quite short though and I think after 1 week you would of had enough. Another point it that the runs are floodlit until 19.00hrs local time. I`d say this is a good resort for people who are just starting out boarding and skiing but if you are at an advanced level this would not be for you.
