Snowfall warning for North Island New Zealand Issued 24 July at 10am local time. A deepening sub-tropical depression will quickly cross North Island on Saturday accompanied by a short period of gales and heavy rain. Expect easterly blizzard conditions to develop on Ruapehu as well as the ranges from the Tararuas to the Kawekas and perhaps even further north. A Cool SE flow with further bands of snow for mountains elsewhere. Many resorts have seen more than 20cm snow over the past 24hrs.

Mammoth Mountain opens early and some years doesn't close until the Fourth of July. Mammoth has added snow making to the top of its highest peak (more than 11,000 feet) and down the Cornice Run. Mammoth is exactly what its name implies: BIG. OK, so how big is it? 3,500 acres to play on, a vertical drop of 3,100 feet, access to lift skiing at 11,053 feet, 156 trails and 27 lifts (9 of which are high-speed zappers). There is an average of 300 days of sunshine a year here. The new Lincoln House and White Mountain Lodge are a village gondola ride away and offer luxury condos from studios to three bedrooms. Full service hotels, convenient motels, luxury condominiums, quaint chalets, cozy cabins, and even dormitory style lodging are all located in the town of Mammoth Lakes, only 4 miles from the ski area.

Just got back from 10 days in Mammoth. The only way I can describe the skiing is completely awesome. We were spoilt by in excess of 5 ft of fresh snow, but let's not take away the simple fact that U can ski anywhere knowing that U will eventually come back to a lift. The uplift system is swift and slick, even being there for Easter w/e the longest wait was only 5 mins. Mountain staff are friendly and helpful, the only downside are a lack of European type mountain watering holes and eateries.
I would definitely consider returning, even with a near 24 hour door to door transfer!
