Snow advisory issued 1st July for New Zealand: Southerly winds by Friday as low pressure moves off the East Coast of the South Island. Widespread snow for the mountains of both islands with snow settling to low levels in the east on Friday night and Saturday. A similar pattern gave Mount Lyford 85 cms of snow last weekend. Update issued Friday 4th July at 6pm NZ time: Snow is already settling to near sea-level in coastal Otago and Southland. Snow will spread quickly north and inland. Windy everywhere with severe gales in exposed eastern parts of South Island and southern North Island and exposed high ground everywhere. Expect dangerous weekend travel conditions over much of South Island and central North Island.

Madesimo in Italy (in the Lombardia region) is a large resort with 12 lifts (9 chair lifts) that offers skiers an incredible 1398 metres (4587 feet) of vertical descent. Madesimo has 32 pistes with a total length of 55 kilometers (34 miles). Madesimo is best suited to intermediate skiers and snowboarders but there is some terrain for beginners and advanced skiers. There are 10 kilometers (6 miles) of cross country ski trails at Madesimo. For snowboarders, there is a terrain park and 4 half pipes. Over half of the pistes at Madesimo are covered by snowmaking. The nearest airport is at Milan / Milano and the nearest train station to Madesimo is at Chiavenna. There is accommodation located close to the pistes but we would welcome additional information about any hotels or chalets in Madesimo.

Been there before Christmas 2005. There were just a couple of people, so ideal for speed-carve training. Only approximately half of the resort was opened and also perhaps the most beautiful part of the slopes - descending from 2950 to the Lei valley behind the hill - was closed. There was approximately 50cms of snow and some icy places later in the day on the steeper end of the slopes falling towards Madesimo village. Go there as you see all the resort is opened and you will be satisfied. So was I, even if we have actually been skying only on some 10-15kms of slopes. But it was a good&hard carve training from my view. My friends didn´t enjoy the stay so much and they didn´t agree to go there again this year :-( but you can try. Maybe just miss the weekend rush and it´ll be ok. Our week-stay was just about 140euro in an appartment with a 6 day skipass :-)) Great value for money. There are wonderful prices also at the end of March/beginning of April and the snow has had quite a good resistance until late spring in this resort in late season.
