Snowfall warning for North Island New Zealand Issued 24 July at 10am local time. A deepening sub-tropical depression will quickly cross North Island on Saturday accompanied by a short period of gales and heavy rain. Expect easterly blizzard conditions to develop on Ruapehu as well as the ranges from the Tararuas to the Kawekas and perhaps even further north. A Cool SE flow with further bands of snow for mountains elsewhere. Many resorts have seen more than 20cm snow over the past 24hrs.

We first came to Lermoos in 2003 as a family and we have returned every year since then. We have always stayed at the Hotel Post which is on the church square and only 200m from the bottom of the ski lifts. This is a truly fabulous hotel with superb, large (not usual in ski resorts!) rooms, great food and in particular a very special level of service and personal welcome. The Grubigstein is the local ski area and provides plenty of variety and challenge for less ambitious skiers like us. It is relatively low altitude but the slopes are north-facing and superbly maintained - even in last year's very difficult conditions, there was top-to-bottom skiing on well groomed pistes - much snow brought down the mountain each night and many snow machines.
In summary, Lermoos and in particular, the Hotel Post, are very highly recommended for family ski holidays - we'll be back in March.
