Snowfall warning for North Island New Zealand Issued 24 July at 10am local time. A deepening sub-tropical depression will quickly cross North Island on Saturday accompanied by a short period of gales and heavy rain. Expect easterly blizzard conditions to develop on Ruapehu as well as the ranges from the Tararuas to the Kawekas and perhaps even further north. A Cool SE flow with further bands of snow for mountains elsewhere. Many resorts have seen more than 20cm snow over the past 24hrs.

La Hoya ski resort and mountain activities center is located close to the town of Esquel, in the Province of Chubut. Its name derives from the mountain shape, which is a wide glacier above a circular basin, where all the ski runs join at the same point at the base. In the 1930’s, pioneer skiers from the region discovered this attractive natural formation and began to visit the mountain. La Hoya offers up trails for all abilities. One outstanding feature is the off-piste skiing and riding.

La Hoya is a small but great ski resort. In recent years there has been lots of investment put into the resort, which has been used to modernise the lifts and construct new buildings. The ski pass is the cheapest in Argentina, making it a great place for the budget skier. The resort has also got one of the most modern snow-parks in South America. Snowfall in La Hoya during winter is usually great, and because of the dry weather of the region the snow remains dry, which is great for back-country. The staff are mainly from the small town of Esquel that is just 13Km away, they are very friendly and helpful. I know most ski resorts in Argentina, and La Hoya is probably my favorite one.
