Snow advisory issued 1st July for New Zealand: Southerly winds by Friday as low pressure moves off the East Coast of the South Island. Widespread snow for the mountains of both islands with snow settling to low levels in the east on Friday night and Saturday. A similar pattern gave Mount Lyford 85 cms of snow last weekend. Update issued Friday 4th July at 6pm NZ time: Snow is already settling to near sea-level in coastal Otago and Southland. Snow will spread quickly north and inland. Windy everywhere with severe gales in exposed eastern parts of South Island and southern North Island and exposed high ground everywhere. Expect dangerous weekend travel conditions over much of South Island and central North Island.

The only ski area in Slovenia where the slopes spread higher than 2,000m. Located above Bovec, with views over the world-renowned Soča River Valley where there is extensive cross-country skiing at low altitude. Because of the high altitude (2,300m) of the main pistes, there is reliable snow and a view that stretches from the heart of the Alps to the Adriatic Sea. There's 15km of slopes, for all standards, served by 7 lifts. It is not usually possible to ski to the valley. A special attraction of the Kanin Ski Center is the opportunity to ski in three countries: at the Sella Nevea and Tarvisio ski resorts in Italy and at the Arnoldstein ski resort in Austria. Guests who purchase a six- or seven-day Kanin ski pass can ski for two days free at these neighbouring resorts.

After visiting Tignes/Val, Les arc, 3 Valleys etc this winter, I wasn't expecting too much from the Kanin ski area in Slovenia, especially as it was May when we visited (white water rafting trip). The ski area has the highest slopes in Slovenia (2300m)and the terrain once we got up there was amazing. What followed was one of the most enjoyable days off- piste riding I've had anywhere. The place is like a giant fun park with drops, jumps and chutes everywhere. I will definately be returning in winter 07' as the place has loads of lift accessed off-piste that noone seems to bother with. Good cheap food and beer, very friendly locals, no crowds & un-touched powder! What more can you ask for. Take your own board though as I think we got the only 2 in town and they were ancient.
