Snow advisory updated Sunday 6th July at 9pm NZ time: Snow developing on Monday for the Victorian Alps and spreading steadily east. Initially snow will only settle above about 1700m but by Tuesday it will fall to resort levels. Moderate to heavy snowfalls then continuing for several more days. Snow showers in New Zealand becoming confined to eastern areas including Mt Ruapehu. On Monday, another cold front crosses the country. Otherwise, fine and frosty weather for most areas until Friday. Avalanche risk on Ruapehu is now rated as extreme. Snow depths are at record levels for the time of year with 5m recorded at Tukino. Check local avalanche advisories before venturing off piste anywhere in NZ this week.. Note, a very small proportion of our pages have gone offline today - including Turoa and Whakapapa. We are looking into the cause.

Geilo in Norway is a large resort with 20 lifts (6 chair lifts, 14 surface lifts) that offers skiers a respectable 375 metres (1230 feet) of vertical descent. Geilo has 39 pistes with a total length of 28 kilometers (18 miles). Geilo is best suited for intermediate skiers and snowboarders but there is a also a lot of terrain for beginners and experts too. There are 220 kilometers (138 miles) of cross country ski trails at Geilo. For snowboarders, there are 2 terrain parks and 2 half pipes. Over half of the pistes at Geilo are covered by snowmaking. The closest airport is at Oslo but at 4 hours the transfer time is very slow. The nearest train station to Geilo is at Geilo. There is accommodation located close to the pistes but we would welcome additional information about any hotels or chalets in Geilo.

The nearest airport is Fagernes which is about a 1hr 45 min coach trip from the resort. Geilo is a small town with a good variety of slopes on both sides including a couple of longish cruising greens/blues on the north side and two board parks on the south side. Also on the south side you can drop over the back from the top of the express lift and access a nice long run on the plateau. Off piste is very limited but you can use the tree breaks between pistes for a bit of variety.
As for apres-ski, check out Recepten in the Dr Holms hotel and Lille Blu, they start late (about 11 or 12) cos alcohol seems to have about the same per ounce value as platinum! You get 0.4 of a litre for between Â£5 and Â£8 depending on the bar you're in so DO take advantage of your duty free allowance on the way out. There are at least 3 mini supermarkets and a couple of good ski/board shops. The standard of accomodation is very good and the locals are friendly.
