Snowfall warning for North Island New Zealand Issued 24 July at 10am local time. A deepening sub-tropical depression will quickly cross North Island on Saturday accompanied by a short period of gales and heavy rain. Expect easterly blizzard conditions to develop on Ruapehu as well as the ranges from the Tararuas to the Kawekas and perhaps even further north. A Cool SE flow with further bands of snow for mountains elsewhere. Many resorts have seen more than 20cm snow over the past 24hrs.

The closest airport is at Salzburg and the transfer time is only 1 hours. The nearest train station to Flachau is at Radstadt. Great area at centre of "Ski Amade", the largest single pass ski area in Austria (0ver 860km of runs, 270 lifts) . Not known in the UK and very underrated by British skiers, but well known among Germans, Dutch and Scandinavians. Great variety of slopes and more than enough directly above the village to keep most people busy for a week, and the huge Ski Amade area will keep the most adventurous happy. Best option is flight to Salzburg, which is only 40 mins away, by taxi or rental car. Munich is just over 2 hours. If you want to tour the surrounding area rental car best option, otherwise taxi from Salzburg is good. Ryanair, Thomsonfly and others now serving Salzburg make this a great combination of first class ski area, very near airport and low cost flights.
Known locally for its reliable snow. For example at Xmas 2006, when most of the alps were struggling people were being bused to this area from others. Skied here at Easter 2006 on a metre of snow right into the village.
This area was picked over Kitzbuehel for the Alpine skiing events in Salzburg's 2014 Winter Olympic bid - which tells you something about the quality of slopes and reliability of snow.
