Snow advisory updated Sunday 6th July at 9pm NZ time: Snow developing on Monday for the Victorian Alps and spreading steadily east. Initially snow will only settle above about 1700m but by Tuesday it will fall to resort levels. Moderate to heavy snowfalls then continuing for several more days. Snow showers in New Zealand becoming confined to eastern areas including Mt Ruapehu. On Monday, another cold front crosses the country. Otherwise, fine and frosty weather for most areas until Friday. Avalanche risk on Ruapehu is now rated as extreme. Snow depths are at record levels for the time of year with 5m recorded at Tukino. Check local avalanche advisories before venturing off piste anywhere in NZ this week..

Campitello in Italy (in the Trentino-Alto Adige region) is a medium sized ski resort with 10 ski lifts (5 chair lifts, 3 surface lifts) that offers skiers an incredible 1008 metres (3307 feet) of vertical descent. Campitello is best suited to intermediate skiers and snowboarders with some terrain for beginners but little of interest for advanced skiers. There are 8 kilometers (5.0 miles) of cross country ski trails at Campitello. Nearly all of the pistes at Campitello are covered by snowmaking. The closest airport is at Munich / Munchen but at 3 hours the transfer time is very slow. The nearest train station to Campitello is at Bolzano. Campitello and nearby village of Canazei are less known than neighbouring resorts but they give you an easy access to the large system of Sella Ronda and accommodation is cheaper. As elsewhere in the Dolomites the snow is not guaranteed. They invested in extensive snow making facilities but you know how that is… So, if you can, don’t reserve your holidays well in advance.

The round trip of Sella Ronda is not something you’d like to do every day since some of the connecting stretches are very flat and you’d need a cross country equipment to enjoy it plus there are crowded bottlenecks due to all the people doing the round trip. Don’t start too late in the morning because you might not get back home before the lifts close down. There are taxis picking people up, but nevertheless. But it’s definitely nice to take the lift and ski for a day in Val Gadena, St. Urlichs or Arraba.
For off-piste enthusiasts there are great possibilities on the Sella massive itself. True mountain experience.
