A severe winter storm is affecting New Zealand. Many South Island resorts have already received 10cm of snow with much more to come tonight. Colder, with further snowfalls over the next 5 days as a SE flow becomes established. Meanwhile, unusually large (4.5m) and powerful (14 second period) swells will continue to affect the Kapiti Coast north of Wellington. Storm waves will steadily ease after midnight. Click to view a detailed surf forecast together with tide times and swell maps for Titahi Bay. Tomorrow morning looks very promising for surfers as winds swing offshore.

The large scale weather maps make no attempt to model local topographic effects which is why there are always large disparities with the detailed and more accurate snow maps. Essentially these are raw GFS model maps with minimal topographic considerations.
