Snow advisory updated Sunday 6th July at 9pm NZ time: Snow developing on Monday for the Victorian Alps and spreading steadily east. Initially snow will only settle above about 1700m but by Tuesday it will fall to resort levels. Moderate to heavy snowfalls then continuing for several more days. Snow showers in New Zealand becoming confined to eastern areas including Mt Ruapehu. On Monday, another cold front crosses the country. Otherwise, fine and frosty weather for most areas until Friday. Avalanche risk on Ruapehu is now rated as extreme. Snow depths are at record levels for the time of year with 5m recorded at Tukino. Check local avalanche advisories before venturing off piste anywhere in NZ this week..

Abetone is the major Apennine resort. It is located in a state forest on the Modena to San Marcello Road, near the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, The ski access points are at Faidello (1220m) Abetone (1400m) Le Regine (1200m) Plan di Novello (1150m) and Cutigliano (733m). The area has 54 lifts over a wide area with 27 at Abetone itself, including many chairs. These access an extensive network of mixed-ability pistes above and below the tree-line. The highest point (Monte Gomito) is 1940m. 20 kilometers of the ski slopes have snow-making facilities. There are 2 ski schools.

Abetone is situated on the mountain pass of the same name, on the border between Tuscany and Emilia and on the avarage less than 80 km from the nearby art cities like Florence, Pistoia, Lucca and Pisa. This ski resort is surrounded by a large forest of fir-tree at an altitude of 1400m and is no doubt the most important ski resorts in the Appennines. The Ski-slopes reach altitudes of up 1900m. The area extends over four wonderful valleys: the Val di Luce, the Valle dello Scoltenna, and the Sestaione and Lima valleys. The total length of the ski-slopes is over 80km. The facilities consist of 4 cable-lifts fitted with the latest technology, 10 chair-lifts, 8 long ski-lifts and 8 baby-lifts.Thanks to well chosen distribution of ski lifts and the optimal connection of slopes, skiers living in the most distant locations of the district area can access slopes wearing their skies and leaving their cars in the garage.
There are many typical Tuscan-style restaurants, pizzerias, snack-bars, pubs, cinemas, clubs and a indoor swimming-pool.
The ski resorts have recently been equipped with artificial snow machines covering about 50 km of slopes.
