I stay in Ames often, and the Courtyard is my favorite place to stay. However, I normally do not stay on game weekends because the price is so inflated...but this is true for all Ames hotels.

My husband and I travel to Boone to do the rail explorers.

My husband and I travel to Boone to do the rail explorers. This town was so cute and so beautiful around every corner, I actually thought about looking at some real estate. The town is very quiet and has that old hometown feel. We ate at The most adorable café for breakfast, The whistle stop Café. Had good Hometown food, three staff members welcomed us as soon as we walked in the door. Definitely suggest this café. The Colorado Grill for dinner was excellent. Absolutely love driving around this town, we are already planning to return!

The Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad is a nice, leisurely excursion and the attached railroad museum is quality. Approximately 1/2 hour from Des Moines but our hotel was considerably cheaper than the capital city's lodging during state fair. Lots of deer in the local park and friendly people. Make sure you eat at the Whistlestop Diner (a local favorite)...good meat and potatoes food but only open until 2 P.M.

Older town with lots of history.

Older town with lots of history. Make sure you have pizza at Beluchhi's best pizza around. Take a train ride while you are there. It is quite an experience going over the Kate Shelley bridge. If you are a race fan they have a fine little race track out on HWY 30. Something for everyone. Close to the college activity in Ames, IA.
