We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials.
There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well.
This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.

Takayama is a beautiful town.
Takayama is a beautiful town. It has a well preserved old district with historic buildings. We visited during spring and took a day trip to the ropeway. It would look amazing during winter. The people were super friendly & enjoyed tourists company.

Lovely old town with great restaurants and Wagyu Hida beef.
Lovely old town with great restaurants and Wagyu Hida beef. Bussling Morning Market down by the river. Excellent museum where you can view the Matsuri carriages which are pulled along the street during celebration. Everything is within walking distance and quaint streets and houses.

The walk up to the castle ruins and Hida no Sato were two favorites, but there was so much to see and do while relaxing that I’d encourage people to take it easy and not try to hit everything. Spend time in your ryokan or hotel stay, and relax.

Everything is within walking distance, there are numerous beautiful temples at the edge of the old town, lots of interesting delicious food - Hida beef the highlight - sushi, on skewers and in buns, mitarashi dango (savoury version in Takayama), warabimochi. Also, make a reservation in advance if you want to eat out and places close early here so be prepared (think it was 8pm) or you’ll find yourself getting dinner at Family Mart which was actually surprisingly good.

This is located close to lots of great restaurants and an easy walk to the old town. Owner was very accommodating and allowed us to leave our car parked for free for a couple hours extra while we had a look around. The accommodation did not have a sofa, but rather a comfy table with four chairs upstairs and downstairs. They had very nice house slippers, which came in handy since the hallways were a bit chilly, but the rooms we used where quite comfortable. I think the locals do a morning market most days along the river near the old town, but they start wrapping it up around 11am. Try the Wagyu beef served on a stick, so yummy and tender!
We stayed in a traditional ryokan room. If more than 2 nights I probably would opt for a full bed. It's a big hotel, but peaceful and quiet.
The in house public onsen was magnificent. The shower room in the room itself is small, more comfortable to have a shower before the onsen.
Facilities are great. Breakfast Buffet choices are similar every day which is fine. Good selection.
Walking distance from train station but also has a shuttle service which is convenient.
Would stay again.
quiet position, very near to the folk village. Great atmosphere. Host was super nice and helpful and spoke English (not a given thing in Japan). Room was BIG and in true Japanese style, even with a tokonoma. Lots of amenities provided (including Yumakata and jackets). dinner and sake (not included) were delicious. Private onsen was big and clean. Free bus for the station in the morning was very nice.
Felt like a VERY good deal for the price, compared to the other ryokans in Takayama.
This hotel’s location was an 8 minute walk from the train station. The major sites were a 15-30 minute walk from the hotel, with center city, and the major restaurants, 15 minutes away. It was a very nice choice in Takayama. A good breakfast was served in a dining area on the second floor. There was a lovely onsen available free to guests on the top floor. The staff was delightful and very helpful.
The location is good being within walking distance of Takayama station. There are also several good restaurants nearby including Matsusaka beef on the menu! It is a short walking distance to the old historical quarter and many of the towns sights and Matsuri Museum. The Morning Market is also close by aong the river. There are also several fine temples close by. Hotel was lovely decor and layout.
This is an excellent budget option: the full ryokan experience at a very affordable price. The rooms are HUGE and the onsen are truly gorgeous. The staff are caring and kind, the room is beautiful with a view of the perfect Japanese garden. I highly recommend staying here. The meals are traditional washoku style — we recommend upgrading the meal to include the marvelous Hida beef.
The ryokan is perfect for a Japanese experience. It is a 3 min walk from the station. The staff is friendly and can speak english. They let us choose between three different types of breakfast and explained everything perfectly during check in. The private onsen is indoor and good equipped (extra charge).
Fantastic for a ryokan experience with onsen!
We loved this family ryokan. So close to all the major sights and shops. We l9ved the private onsen and our room had its own ensuite. The meals were an absolute highlight and Sumiko -San was an absolute delight. We hope we can come back soon as Takayama has been one of our favourite towns so far.
Good place near the Takayama Nohi Bus Center which is the main hub of visiting nearby towns and cities. I especially liked the small onsen. Most places in Takayama close soon so we usually returned to the hotel early and it gave me enough time to relax at the onsen
The location is perfect.
The size of the room is way bigger than we expected. Washer/dryer in our own unit. Cook top /cookware and seasoning is also available for us to make a simple meal.
If we ever come back to Takayama, we will definitely book this hotel again.
The hotel is surrounded by nature, it is a very calm and beautiful atmosphere. The rooms are ample, in the tradional Japanese Ryokan style, full of amenities and with a really nice view. The staff was very nice and helpful. The onsen installations were superb.
Staff were wonderful . Breakfasts were cooked individually for you . Room was huge - i mean HUGE !! Great shower . Hotel is very close to the Takayama station and to OLD TOWN . You can walk to all the local attractions from the hotel .
The staff is really great and the treatment is beyond excellent. They were always amazing and make sure we had a great time.
The hotel is really beautiful and you get to sleep in a real Japanese ryokan
Authentic Japanese Ryokan experience. Very clean, very polite staff, and very close to the train station, restaurants and morning market. We loved our stay and definitely will come back.
Amazing place for a wonderdul experience of traditionnal ryokan and Onsen.
Everything was just perfect : room, breakfast, dinner, onsen, staff.
The best value for money in Japan !
Room size, the hotel is not so close to the Takayama station but the hotel provides transfer. The hotel installations are amazing, close to the hotel there is a family mart.
The Hida Takayama Green Hotel is very nice, especially the Orinkaku wing. Beds were comfortable, room was clean, view was very nice, cleaning staff were kind and helpful.
