ELE Hotel Onsen Ryokufutei, hotel in Kusatsu

Indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths are on offer at ELE Hotel Onsen Ryokufutei 緑風亭, which features traditional rooms with Yukata robes and a flat-screen TV.

The free shuttle service (to and from bus station and to and from ski resort) was pretty convenient. It's far enough from the center so that you can experience peace and quiet but not too far that the walk becomes a hassle. The breakfast was pretty abundant. and the on site onsen was great!!

Hanaingen, hotel in Kusatsu

Hanaingen is an adult only accommodations located in Kusatsu, just a 2-minute walk from Yubatake, or the hot water field in Kusatsu Onsen.

Very welcoming staff who gave me full tour of the place and went over all the amenities and how to use them. Staff doesn't speak English but has prepared sheets in English to go over frequently asked questions and rules. The location is great! It is just a block away from the main area and up the hill so from bus stop to the ryokan is short walk even if you have huge luggage and don't need to worry about going up and down steep hill with heavy stuff. Facilities were very clean and the welcome tea and snacks were very delicious. I got to try making my own matcha tea for the first time and the breakfast was light but also very delicious! As it was close to the bus station, I didn't need to rush to get on the first bus back to the train station. I will definitely stay here again for my next visit!

I love this town for its distinctly authentic Japanese feel.

I love this town for its distinctly authentic Japanese feel. It is nestled in the mountains, a gorgeous drive from Tokyo (If you have the time, drive!) Many places to drop in for a foot soak, lots of little shops and restaurants. Prepare to wait in the busy season (which I believe is the fall and winter). This time we stayed in a traditional Japanese hotel with tatami and only futons for sleeping- being from the US, this made the trip especially fun but make sure you are ok with getting up and down from the floor. There are less people who speak English than in the major cities. But if you are comfortable pointing and smiling and trying google translate, it is a beautiful place to visit. Note that people with limited mobility may find the town difficult to navigate (steps and steep hills). Better for adults, but there is a little tropical zoo nearby and the onsen demonstration is fun.

Lovely Onsen town. Simply magical during winter.

Lovely Onsen town. Simply magical during winter. We went in February and it was snowing. Family love it so much that we’re planning to visit for next winter. A lot of private hot spring and delicious food. We had kaiseki for breakfast and dinner at our ryokan. Definitely worth the trip and ain’t too far from Tokyo. Stay a night if possible.

If you want to experience the quintessential Japanese, hot-...

If you want to experience the quintessential Japanese, hot-spring town in the mountains then, Kusatsu is the place for you. It takes a while to get there with the train and bus but if you have the time then I would recommend it. The culture surrounding hot-springs is unique to the Japanese and there is no better place to experience it. Get early there for a day trip because most buses coming down to the train station stop running around 7 PM.

Kusatsu is a great place for natural hotsprings.

Kusatsu is a great place for natural hotsprings. Great Onsen. Its best to go for relaxation purpose and take a dip in the hotsprings. The places to look out for are 1) Yubatake (center of the town) - Please do visit in the evenings as well when the lights turn ON and make it a beautiful view. 2) Sainokawara Park and Open air Onsen. This is a must visit place to spend good walk in the park and then visit Open air Onsen JR Bus station is very close to center - Yubatake. So it's just a 5mins walk and also there are round trip bus by JR to all sightseeing spots. Most of the resorts offer shuttle bus service also; so I recommend to check with your resort before booking. This really helped us. The food is next best thing in Kusatsu. However if you are Vegetarian like us you might find difficulty to find good restaurants. However, there are a couple of Italian restaurants that offer good pasta and pizza which is loaded with vegetables. One major thing to note is the Bus service from Kusatsu Bus station to Nagonahara Kusatsuguchi. The bus service is not regular; so please check it and plan your outbound trip.

The Yubatake area is picturesque and has many nearby shops with Japanese treats you can take out and eat/drink while sitting and enjoying the ambiance of Yubatake. Lots of traditional Japanese buildings, walkable streets with shops selling souvenirs and Japanese treats. Be sure to take the 10min walk from Yubatake thru Sainokawahara Koen (Park) to the large outdoor hot spring bath Sainokawhara Rotenburo.

The iconic attraction of kusatsu are the hot springs. I have tried various ones, Kusatsu hot springs are relaxing and the the feeling is wonderful. The food in the town is delicious, I tried Udon with Tempura in some places, it was just delicious. Don’t forget to try the onsen tamago as a speciality of the town.

Amazing villa, very nicely setup for large groups. The entire, personal, onsen downstairs was amazing! While it felt a little way away from the main area of Kusatsu, it probably helped being away from the main source of the sulfur smell. (Make sure you keep the multiple doors closed down to the personal onsen to also keep that smell at bay!) Also, the location was walking distance to a great BBQ restaurant, amazing onsen, and a 7-11 for supplies. And the staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful. Very much recommended!

Great location-close to yubatake and Kusatsu bus terminal. The rooms were spacious and very clean with 2 full size beds that were very comfortable and warm. The Staff was so friendly and helpful. They let us store our luggage so we could explore the area after checking out. The manager even offered to transport our luggage to the next hotel. This is one of the more affordable places to stay in Kusatsu and we will definitely stay here again!

Situated at the end of the road from the yubatake, it's perfect and not noisy. There aren't many rooms, so it means the onsen are less packed! They also have their own foot bath, so there is no need to wait or find an empty one outside. It's also close to Sainokawara Park, so you can easily go for a breathtaking walk at night! (Before the hotel door closes, of course)

First traditional onsen ryokan experience for me and my Aussie partner. We were absolutely stunned by how elegant and detailed of food was. It was lucky that Tokyo snowed few days ago so we get to see snow covering Kusatsu. We bathed in the onsen admiring how unreal the view was with snow. Brilliant service too but the front desk can barely speak English.

We stayed at Pedalo (a separate mini complex with three rooms with private onsen tubs). It was beautiful and convenient, located right next to the main building. The location is perfect for walking to the bus station, but the hotel also offers a free shuttle. We also used a private onsen in the main building, which was available for extra payment.

Comfortable and clean rooms with good beds. Receptionist DC was very friendly and provided good service and information. Basic breakfast was adequate especially the freshly made strawberry banana smoothie. Very good location, few minutes walk to the yubatake area and yet very quiet. Good value especially for a Saturday night in Kusatsu Onsen.
