I love this town for its distinctly authentic Japanese feel.
I love this town for its distinctly authentic Japanese feel. It is nestled in the mountains, a gorgeous drive from Tokyo (If you have the time, drive!) Many places to drop in for a foot soak, lots of little shops and restaurants. Prepare to wait in the busy season (which I believe is the fall and winter). This time we stayed in a traditional Japanese hotel with tatami and only futons for sleeping- being from the US, this made the trip especially fun but make sure you are ok with getting up and down from the floor. There are less people who speak English than in the major cities. But if you are comfortable pointing and smiling and trying google translate, it is a beautiful place to visit. Note that people with limited mobility may find the town difficult to navigate (steps and steep hills). Better for adults, but there is a little tropical zoo nearby and the onsen demonstration is fun.

Lovely Onsen town. Simply magical during winter.
Lovely Onsen town. Simply magical during winter. We went in February and it was snowing. Family love it so much that we’re planning to visit for next winter. A lot of private hot spring and delicious food. We had kaiseki for breakfast and dinner at our ryokan. Definitely worth the trip and ain’t too far from Tokyo. Stay a night if possible.

If you want to experience the quintessential Japanese, hot-spring town in the mountains then, Kusatsu is the place for you. It takes a while to get there with the train and bus but if you have the time then I would recommend it. The culture surrounding hot-springs is unique to the Japanese and there is no better place to experience it.
Get early there for a day trip because most buses coming down to the train station stop running around 7 PM.

Kusatsu is a great place for natural hotsprings.
Kusatsu is a great place for natural hotsprings. Great Onsen. Its best to go for relaxation purpose and take a dip in the hotsprings. The places to look out for are 1) Yubatake (center of the town) - Please do visit in the evenings as well when the lights turn ON and make it a beautiful view.
2) Sainokawara Park and Open air Onsen. This is a must visit place to spend good walk in the park and then visit Open air Onsen
JR Bus station is very close to center - Yubatake. So it's just a 5mins walk and also there are round trip bus by JR to all sightseeing spots. Most of the resorts offer shuttle bus service also; so I recommend to check with your resort before booking. This really helped us.
The food is next best thing in Kusatsu. However if you are Vegetarian like us you might find difficulty to find good restaurants. However, there are a couple of Italian restaurants that offer good pasta and pizza which is loaded with vegetables.
One major thing to note is the Bus service from Kusatsu Bus station to Nagonahara Kusatsuguchi. The bus service is not regular; so please check it and plan your outbound trip.

The Yubatake area is picturesque and has many nearby shops with Japanese treats you can take out and eat/drink while sitting and enjoying the ambiance of Yubatake. Lots of traditional Japanese buildings, walkable streets with shops selling souvenirs and Japanese treats. Be sure to take the 10min walk from Yubatake thru Sainokawahara Koen (Park) to the large outdoor hot spring bath Sainokawhara Rotenburo.

The iconic attraction of kusatsu are the hot springs.
The iconic attraction of kusatsu are the hot springs. I have tried various ones, Kusatsu hot springs are relaxing and the the feeling is wonderful.
The food in the town is delicious, I tried Udon with Tempura in some places, it was just delicious.
Don’t forget to try the onsen tamago as a speciality of the town.
Great location-close to yubatake and Kusatsu bus terminal.
The rooms were spacious and very clean with 2 full size beds that were very comfortable and warm.
The Staff was so friendly and helpful. They let us store our luggage so we could explore the area after checking out. The manager even offered to transport our luggage to the next hotel. This is one of the more affordable places to stay in Kusatsu and we will definitely stay here again!
The Kusatsu Onsen Hotel Village is more a resort than a hotel. I don’t know when it was built, but I’m guessing around the mid-seventies, when the resort was probably a very nice place to spend your vacation.
The baths are very nice.
The staff is top notch!!! Helpful and nice at all times. But then again, so was every person we met in Japan for 3 weeks, so I’m sure you would find that on other local hotels as well.
It was very comfortable, beds 10/10, they were very cosy and kept us warm and also include an electric blanket. Two of the 3 of us were from hot and sunny Qld Australia and our son brought us to Kusatsu Onsen at a time when it was very cold and snowing. It was exceptionally wonderful time to visit when it snowed.
The onsens in the hotel were great as well as the ones in the park and town.
We had a perfect stay at the Bekkan Wata No Yu hotel. The employees (especially Mika) are very friendly and helped us regarding all our questions. We took also once breakfast and dinner ´, which was very good. The hotel is close to the small shop are and the relevant Onsens sites are in walk distance. Also the ski area is not far away.
Great location, traditional feel, quiet hotel, roomier than expected, 4 indoor private onsens with temps posted (HOT) which were available whenever we were looking to use them, plenty of parking. I'm saw kids enjoying the playroom with toys on the premises. Staff was friendly and helpful. Great value for money.
Such a comfortable Japanese historical onsen hotel, reception staffs are kind, helpful and skilled in English.
Outside public onsen is quite big(compared with others local hotel) and with good maintained.
Breakfast is appetizing especially salmon and miso-siru.
Good location close to nishikawara park
Very well located onsen hotel in the center of Kusatsu (<5min to central Yubatake springs). Older hotel but well kept. Excellent service and good breakfast/dinner buffet meals. Large variety of meal options at buffets! Several Onsen to choose from (3 inside hotel and 2 at sister hotel).
Kind and attentive host, tasteful furnishing, everywhere seems the ownership spirit of the 5 generations (as we learned). English fluently spoken. The famous Kusatsu hot water in the house onsen. 1st class futon beds. Could not choose any better.
Both the hotel and the room were absolutely beautiful. All facilities were clean and the onsen was really great as-well. The hotel is a short walk from the centre so it’s easy to look around. Definitely recommend!
We love the onsen and the room is well kept.
They have a lot of kitchen equipment, utensils and condiments for us to cook.
Nearby there is a 711 store for us to do marketing for our dinner.
Best hotel we stayed at throughout our trip involving 6 hotels! Room size was generous, and the Gender-separate onsens, the location across the bus station and Breakfast was great.
Onsen is good. Even though it is so crowded. My room in wing building is so big and not far from either restaurant or onsen. Free shuttle bus to bus station and yubatake.
The location is very nice, not to far away from the center of Kusatsu Onsen. It is perfect for people travelling on a budget. The beds are quite confortable.
