The 'Tree House' rooms are really exceptional. They're individual stand-alone chalets, set in an absolutely beautiful rainforest with ferns, trees, and lush green plants along a narrow path. They appear brand-new, and were in excellent shape. Ours did not have a spa, but some do.
The on-site restaurant, Monsoon, was friendly and comparable with anything in town.

A must see on any New Zealand itinerary, but one day is sufficient. Perfect for adventurous young people who like walking, not so much for older persons. The helicopter ride was bit of a rip-off as the weather closed in and we could not land on the glacier. Although they did give us a little refund, it was not up to our expectations and very expensive 20 minute ride.

Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora...
Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora and fauna. The walks were amongst the most scenic and beautiful we’ve ever experienced. Only downside, which I feel needs to be more clearly explained to visitors, is that the glaciers themselves can only be seen and viewed from the lookout points if it is a clear day without low hanging cloud. We were disappointed to not actually see the Franz Josef Glacier nor the Fox Glacier from the fartherest reach of the walks. Environmentally, we were not prepared to fly/chopper to see the glaciers from the air. Nevertheless, the walks themselves are a must do, driving through the region is gob-smackingly beautiful and the walk around Lake Matheson a must see.

Our helihike was cancelled due to weather, so we did a quad bike in the rain. IT WAS AWESOME! We smiled for the entire two hours.
There is a sweet chapel for quiet and reflection.
We never saw the glaciers as it rained for three days straight which was so sad.
The grocery and a few restaurants were enough to find something to eat.

We were unlucky with the weather, as there was low cloud and some rain. We took a couple of walks to see the glacier from viewing points which were really good. Paths were very good, not muddy, and there were signs to explain the ecology and history.

A small town with a couple of shops and plenty pubs/restaurants. The glacier is 7kms from the town - drive to the car park and then there’s a short walk to the viewing area - you’ll need binoculars or a long lens to truly appreciate the beauty of the glacier. Fox Glacier is 30 mins away and again there’s a pretty uphill walk to a viewing area. You can get a helicopter onto the glacier but they are $$$.
Lake Mathewson is worth visiting while in Fox, park at the car park and walk 30/40 mins to the jetty. Beautiful especially at sunset but use bug spray as there are lots of midgies!

Our room was spacious and comfortable, meals were of a high quality, with breakfast outstanding, and all staff friendly, welcoming and efficient. When weather closed off our helicopter flights we had no problem extending our stay in the same room inspite of almost a fully booked hotel. Our experience at Scenic Franz Joseph led us to book Scenic in Dunedin and we experienced the same high quality there.
My husband and I stayed here just for one night before our Franz Josef Glacier heli-hike tour.
Easy 2 min drive to the township for dinner.
Seamless afterhours check in with key in lockbox.
Great communication by staff via messages for all relevant information.
Heater was great which dried out all of our wet jackets and the cottage was so spacious!
I would recommend others to stay here.
Private, parking right at the door and such an amazing view too!!
Nice motel in Franz Josef. Host was good and very informative. Place provides free vegetable soup in the evening and complimentary breakfast. The place has a free SPA pool for the guests. We saw few questions using the motel kitchen area to cook their own food. There is also a common video games area. The room was clean. There is a Four Square right behind the motel and all the restaurants are walking distance. The room had a small TV.
Larg, clean room on the second floor with a huge window. The dense foliage out the window made it seem as if you were in a treehouse. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful. She provided a large umbrella for our use and even offered to help with our bags. The location was perfect for the small town of Franz Joseph and just a short 10 minute drive to the hike to view Franz Joseph glacier.
Great location to stay to break up our road trip down the West Coast.
Bella Vista's facilities are always clean and tidy no matter where in NZ you go.
PS - there seems to be some resident keas...
The new snow on the nearby mountains was a treat and it's a short drive to visit Lake Matheson (much better value than the glacier moraine walk - all you see now is a pile of shingle!!)
Immediately felt at home at the Aspen Court Franz Josef. From the friendly welcome to the well appointed room that was spacious and very clean and tidy. We had asked for 2 rooms close together and they were side by side. On check out day we asked if we could have one room for a couple more hours and this was no problem.
This is an adults only hotel and is very quiet and relaxing. It is not a chain hotel so it has a more personal feel about it, and provides a good base for exploring the area. It is close to restaurants and to commercial tourism operators. In addition the Department of Conservation has an office in town.
The Chateau is centrally located in Franz Josef. It is a great place to stay on your travels through Glacier country. The host welcomes you and had great tips about where to eat. They offer free soup and the breakfast is good! It is a nice little family but with enough privacy (I booked a private room).
Absolutely loved this little cabin. It felt like being in the middle of nowhere but so close to Franz Josef. The weather was kind and we had views of snow on the mountains and a sky full of stars every night. Very cosy and comfortable with a lovely and welcoming host.
It was close to the glacier walk and other interesting walks. However, it was required to drive there. The rooms were very clean and the beds were comfy. The kitchen was well equipped. Keep in mind to bring table games to play when it is raining. I liked the price.
We had a fantastic experience honeymooning at the rainforest retreat. The staff were friendly and helpful. Special shout to Mel for being so accommodating & helpful with our questions.
The accomodation was well kept & clean. We loved our stay & will be back again.
The hotel is in walking distance from the centre of town. Our room had a nice deep spa bath to relax in after a long day travel. Manager was really nice and gave us tips on the location and a bit of history of Franz Josef.
This is by far the best hotel in the Franz Josef area. We really enjoyed our stay here. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Location is central to shops and restaurants. All good!
We were expecting shared bathrooms but each had a private ensuite, which was great! Wonderful hostel vibes but with hotel amenities. Free veggie soup for dinner, and free breakfast.
Stunning views from this small but beautiful cabin. Spotlessly clean. Can watch the sun set over Franz Josef Glacier from the deck. Very comfortable bed.
