Best pillow among the hostels I've stay at so far! But more importantly the owners are very kind and generous and their lovely daughter likes to be social :) Shame not to spend more time in the area. Great to have a bar to hang your clothes/coat up!

Makito-san is incredibly nice and helpful and went out of his way to help us when we had a luggage problem. The food was fancy and delicious, and an upgrade from what I was expecting. The building itself was fascinating. The bath was excellent.

I had 3D2N stay and I felt it wasn’t enough! I slept in 2nd floor standard twin room. The view is so good! You wake up and see the sunshine on the mountain and slept with stars (plus glowing in the dark stickers on wallpaper). The bed and pillow is very nice to sleep on. It supports back and neck well enough with adequate softness. However, you must remember to shut the window properly to avoid cold wind in the room. I didn’t get to use any heater so just put on double blanket. Reasonably priced dinner is a must have! It’s a bit salty but fine. You’ll get to eat like what locals eat at home. The view from the dining area is amazing as well. The breakfast is ordinary and nice. The family’s hospitality is heartwarming. The toddler son is so sweet and the dog is cute. I was surprised that it has own private onsen which accomodate 1 person at a time. If you’re a family / couple, can use the bigger one. Shower + onsen from 6am - 10pm daily. I used it morning, evening and night time, so value-worthy that you don’t have to tour the other 7 well-known onsen if you don’t want to pay extra for onsen. The location is strategic as it’s 30mins by bus to and fro Tawazako Station to the nearest stop Kyuyo Centre (500 Yen/Trip). If you plan to visit the Tawaza Lake in daytime, it’s approx 20mins by bus (370Yen/Trip). There’s a park just around the corner to have a nice walk if you just want to hangout around the house.

    お部屋が広く、お風呂とトイレが独立していて良かったです。大浴場もあり、平日利用でしたので人が少なかったこと。

    Kakunodate was a fascinating town with the historical samurai houses. Obviously it would be spectacular at cherry blossom time. We were a little too early for the autumn colours. If you have a JR Rail pass it's an easy trip to the nearby Lake Tazawa(?)
