This was a very clean and comfortable hotel, right on the ski slopes. We sent our skiis to and from Narita airport via the affordable luggage delivery. Room was huge and clean, onsen was nice, staff was very helpful and friendly. Discount ski lift tickets are available at the front desk.

Dinner and breakfast were amazing.

Zao onsen is a lovely getaway in the Japanese mountains.
Zao onsen is a lovely getaway in the Japanese mountains. Mostly tailored to skiers and snowboarders though, with the many hills and ski facilities. But it's also a lovely place for a brief visit if you want some relaxation and onsens. We visited mainly for seeing the Zao Snow monsters and relaxing at a nice hotel. Unforuntately the Snow Monsters had already melted when we were there, and only one cablecar worked going up the mountain, so there was a huge line.
The town is cozy with a few restaurant options. We did not ski and stayed for two nights which was just the right amount of time, as there's not that much to experience in the town, other than ski, visit onsen and take the cablecar (if it's working properly)

It's good for a few days of hitting the slopes and had a surprising number for eateries compared to some of the other onsen towns.
The juhyo (snow monster) is an interesting sight (depending on the weather) especially since you will have to go right to the top of the mountain to see it.
It has a night viewing session depending on the season for the juhyo also.
And if you're driving, Yamagata town is just a short 30mins drive down the mountain and you'll have more eateries to choose from.

I stayed in Zao Onsen in mid October and had a beautiful time absorbed in the energy of the mountains and blown away by the ‘koyo’ autumn leaves 🧡 In the off season, it proves a serene escape to soak in the onsens, and take in the clean air and stunning views on various hikes. I can only imagine how much fun it would be when covered in snow!

I booked for a group of 3 families.
When I checked in they assumed that the Japanese family is the primary contact. The hotel front refused my ID and address and INSISTED that the Japanese family should be the primary contact and address.
This is unacceptable considering that I am the one booking.
It caused a lot of confusion and uncomfortable to my group.
If you do not want foreigner to book the property then why bother listing it in the booking.com?

Interesting for its hot springs one can find almost everywhere and its location in a charming mountain are. The little town itself doesn't offer much and is rather boring. Few restaurants that close early at about 3 pm and hardly any shopping facilities. Fortunately, there is at least a small convenience store. The sulphurous smell of the hot springs can be noticed all around the area.

Staying at the Christmas Rose Hotel was perfect for hot springs ( onsen ) and also close to convenience store. The owners are very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Free rides to zao hp town and had coupons for the four main hot springs there. Tatami mat flooring and Japanese type hotel. Perfect for relaxing away from major city type hotels. Peaceful time memories. I have videos on youtube also about it. Highly recommended!! Zao Onsen is an amazing place.
Amazing location, about 2 minutes walk maximum to the gondola. 4-5 minute walk to a lovely public onsen with an outdoor area. few minutes walk to restaurants in the area.
The host lady was phenomenal, so helpful, kind and friendly. She recommended to get a taxi from the stop before Yamagata as we traveled Friday night and there was no buses. Booked our taxi and it was very cheap.
Room was comfortable and we enjoyed the Kotatsu in the room. Hot bath area was fine :).
Perfect hosts, they are so accommodating and kind. They made recommendations about everything I asked, made sure the stay was comfortable and even went above and beyond for me so I can better experience the area (like giving me towels even after I checked out)
I highly recommend this place if you’re in Zao Onsen! Will
definitely stay again when I’m back.
The staff there are super nice and friendly, answering all the stupid questions from us. The breakfast (pre-ordered) was sooo good with a lot of specialities. We regret not reserving for the dinner as the breakfast was way beyond our expectations. The onsen was good and comfortable as well! Will consider stay here again if come to Zao Onsen next time.
The beautiful view from your bedroom high ceiling windows, along corridors, lobby abs breakfast venue is fabulous. Outdoor sulfer onsen is really good, but you have to walk pass thru snow, (hotel provide you a snow coat, boots and umbrella for you to use). Dining and breakfast are variety.
The Matsuo’s spoke English, Japanese, and Chinese among several other Asian dialects. They made a special effort to get to know each guest. They went above and beyond to help me with my ski rentals and luggage transportation to the airport. Such a lovely couple!
We arrived early and they were able to provide us with name checkin and left luggage. We were then able to Ski that day! Bonus! Very easy! Great half board with the Japanese set dinner for one night and and shabu shabu next.
Shu san and his family was so kind to me and nice they made me feel at home.
Also the ryokan location is winner, you have public onsen in front of the ryokan. If you like to feel the Japanese tradition then this is for you.
It was snowing so hard, and we went to Zao by bus. Instead of walking from the bus terminal to the hotel, they picked us up. Good customer service + complimentary snacks, fruits, drinks. Highly recommended!!
The staff and owners are very kind and helpful. We went during winter where there was heavy snow, and they offered pickup and drop off from bus station to hotel, to onsen, to restaurant and Zao ropeway.
The accommodation is great and the host family is super nice! Great place to stay when skiing. They helped us out a lot and gave us lots of good advice that allowed us to enjoy Zao Onsen to the max.
Very accommodating hotel staffs. Even I arrived past the check-in time, there was a hotel staff who welcomed me at the lobby and patient enough to accommodate my request despite the language barrier.
Good location Ski in/out. They also have the ticket discount at front desk. Nice hot spring and the drink/wine are included in the dinner buffet. It’s good hotel for family trip.
