While Yamanouchi is known for its proximity to snow monkeys, it wasn't what stood out to me about the area. The snow monkeys just have too many tourists to be truly enjoyable. Yamanouchi has beautiful mountain views, charming winding streets with quirky decorations, and onsen hopping among different ryokans is something to look forward to. If you look behind the main street, you'll see many stairways leading to many shrines. We had dinner at a sushi restaurant ran by an elderly couple, on traditional tatami floors. It felt like eating at someone's house, and they absolutely stuffed us with delicious sushi. Two nights would probably be the best to fully wind down.

Amazing amount of terrain in the ski fields.
Amazing amount of terrain in the ski fields. Need to have better maps (in English) available for the runs. A (live) board showing which lifts and runs are open would be great, prior to entering the areas.
The snow was amazing!!!!
Restaurants were good however the area appeared to be directed at locals (Japanese) rather than tourists. We had to do a lot of work to find somewhere to eat.
It would be great to have some public onsens available in the area.

Our stay at a ryokan just couple miles from Snow Monkey Park...
Our stay at a ryokan just couple miles from Snow Monkey Park was the absolute highlight of a trip filled with highlights. Specifically we stayed at Onyado Hishiya Torazo, and loved everything about it - the room, the food, the staff, and the oh so relaxing onsen! We made the mistake of only booking one night and the short turn around combined with outside temps down in the low 20’s (F) meant we never did try any of the public onsen. Trust me - two days here is the minimum!
Snow Monkey Park ended up being another highlight (and between my wife and I, we have about 1,000 pictures to prove it!). Before going we were concerned that it might seem contrived at best and a bad situation for the monkeys at worst. But they were absolutely there of their own free will and happily making use of the large onsen on a cold winter’s day. Get there early - we got there about an hour after opening and wished we’d been an hour earlier. It started to fill up about 20 minutes after we got there.
Here’s the weird thing, and the only downside - and I don’t quite know how to explain it. The town was basically closed! And we were there Jan 26-27, a decent snow had fallen a couple days earlier and a light snow fell the morning of the 27th. I thought this would be big tourist season, but we barely saw another sole in town. And those few we did see were almost all tourists out taking pictures in their yukata. This made for a very quiet morning, which was great. But we had planned to pick up our luggage at the ryokan after visiting the monkey park and meander through town stopping to eat, drink, or shop as we made our way to the train station. But nothing was open so we caught an earlier train and ate in Nagano while waiting for our Shinkansen.

The Ryokan Biyunoyado was just fabulous.
The Ryokan Biyunoyado was just fabulous. They have shuttle bus to and from station. also to the snow monkeys. We were late and they returned to station to collect us. Onsens were great. The food was amazing and plenty of it. Japanese style room was very comfortable and beds made up when we were at dinner. Definitely stay here when you come to see the snow monkeys. it’s the best.

Its a great spot for visiting the snow monkeys and a quick snow board at Ryuoo Ski Resort. A walk through the older Shibu Onsen town is also fun for people who like that. We went to three different restaurants in the town and they were all good.
The negatives were that the roads and paths were slippery with ice, so bring appropriate footware if visiting in winter (although your hotel might have some).
Almost all places were cash only.

We went primarily to ski.
We went primarily to ski. We had one day of bad weather, so visited the Monkey Park that day - definitely worth doing! We had three days skiing at Ryuoo and one at Komase. We attempted to get to one of the Shiga Kogan ski parks for one day but could not get the public transport schedules to align well enough.
We really enjoyed experience:
Very friendly and helpful host, speaking English
the excellent food at breakfast and dinner, variety of vegetable/fish and very nice presentation, excellent in quality and quantity, a joy for the eyes and the body.
Nice interior of the room and hotel, quiet at night
Onsen inside the hotel, by booking your time. This was fantastic as we could enjoy the experience as a private onsen, highly appreciated.
Excellent location of the hotel inside the village
Free parking on the premises of the hotel
Very authentic and centrally located hotel in an old family house comprised of two buildings. The owner was very polite and helpful, answering any question we had. Japanese breakfast was impressive and best of all was the outdoor onsen inside the property. Better than any other public onsen in town. The building is oldish but in good condition and clean. In winter temperature inside the house was a bit low but the thick futon beds and blankets were good. Not a luxury stay but very recommendable for a great experience.
I liked the great, professional, and friendly service from everyone at the hotel. Also, the hotel and ski storage is conveniently located right at the ski slopes. The room was clean, spacious, and warm, with a forest view. The Japanese baths and onsen soaking pool were the absolute best, and a wonderful way to relax after a day of skiing. Delicious breakfasts and dinners were provided buffet-style in the dining room as well as the choice to dine at other restaurants in the community.
I booked at 3:30PM for the same evening and called to ask if I could still join dinner. I could and am very grateful! It was super delicious, with a endless variety of dishes. The hotel itself is very cosy, with comfortable, clean and spacious Japanese-style rooms (six or seven I believe), while having two onsen baths! The couple that own/run the hotel, are most friendly and fabulous cooks. The hotel is just a 5 minute walk down the road from Yudanaka Station in a quiet street.
We enjoyed our time at Shimaya. The host was kind enough to leave us with a parting gift and a group photo to capture our stay. This hotel is not part of the group of ryokans that allow you access to Shibu onsen, HOWEVER you do get to access the onsen around the corner. At first we were disappointed that we could not access the 9 onsens, but after visiting the one we really enjoyed it and found that a lot of locals gravitated to it as well.
The staff is tremendous. All fluent in English and super helpful. I had a mild cold and they even got me some meds so I wouldn't have to struggle at the pharmacy looking. The room was comfortable being a ryoken, but for western guests it will be an experience compared to a normal hotel. The town is quaint, very few speak English but are always helpful and definitely warmer as you drink with them
excellent service, drove me to the snow monkeys and then drove me 20mins to my train station, it was out of their way
all australians going skiing or to the snow monkeys come to this hotel, the family is great, good heating, clean, friendly family, good location, for snow monkeys and skiing and excellent in winter, with the onsen spring spa on site for free
Clean, comfortable and very convenient for Ichinose ski lifts, the Tappa Room (the only bar in Ichinose), Prince Hotel West Wing restaurants and the bus stop. Good onsen/ public bath. Basic but decent breakfast included. After the first day we got the room warmed up really well - heating is on from 3pm to 10am, and is very hot when it's on.
The staff is amazing, very friendly. They pick you up and drop you off at the station, there is a shuttle service to the monkey park.
The room is so traditional. Just in front of the hotel there are 2 bath houses.
Variation of food, good food, nice dessert as well. In the whole, it's like going back 60 years in time.
This is not an inexpensive stay...but the room was beautiful, tranquil and our private onsen (hot tub) was exquisite., fed by an endless stream of naturally flowing water from two of the towns nine hot springs. The food was delicious and beautifully presented and the hotel is situated in a charming village.
Excellent hotel close to both Yudanaka, Shibu Onsen and Snow Monkey Park. Great value for money with family room.
Alos excellent restaurant/ cafe on ground floor selling delicious burgers. Very close to bus and easy walking to both towns.
Would stay again and recommend.
This hotel is amazing!! The owners are so lovely and kind - they picked us up from the bus stop and also dropped us in the town after we’d checked out. The traditional dinner was UNREAL - could not recommend more highly! Gorgeous traditional rooms! Loved our stay!
Rooms were very clean and comfortable.
Onsen was clean and nice. The hotel was very close to the slopes and you can rent gear in the hotel. It's also very close to the busstop, so very easy to reach from the train station. Staff was very friendly.
Hosts were exceptional. DONT stay anywhere else. Treated like family. Easy to reach by train. Easy to bus up the ski fields. Great selection of places to eat in Yamanouchi - ask hosts. Good start to the day with their complimentary breakfast.
so friendly. delicious meals. Small family run ryokan it is located on the quiet small road in the middle of the 9 Onsens popular to visit and do a stamp rally. it is opposite a hotel that looks like it is from Ghibli’s Spirited Away movie.
Amazing traditional ryokan with excellent breakfast and dinner included. Staff was very helpful giving us a ride to both the Monkey Park and Shibu Onsen. Get the room with the private onsen, you won’t be disappointed!
Good location to all the public baths and restaurants. It’s one of those self check-in hotels with minimal staff. There had a bar was often was not open during the hours stated.
Traditional Japanese style hotel, great experience.
Tasty breakfast, many options to choose from. Super close to ski lift, literally 2 minute walk. Hotel has Public baths.
