We have been here a few times now and love it. It is the gateway to Mt Cook - we have done a heli hike, some wonderful walks and tramps, taken in the rivers and lakes, soaked in the hot tubs, eaten at local restaurants, shopped in the local stores, star gazed .... the list goes on.
The locals are super friendly - Twizel is just down the road from Tekapo but is nowhere near as busy or commercial. Accessible from Christchurch or Queenstown - you can fly into one, rent a car and fly out from the other, or just do a round trip. We will be back !!

Restaurants and cafes very busy and some were closed.
Restaurants and cafes very busy and some were closed. Since it was Easter Sunday and the finish of Warbirds Airshow, we had difficulty finding somewhere to have dinner and certainly no place for breakfast.

Twizel is a small town but growing, with new housing areas on the edge of town and spreading out from there. It is mainly a holiday town but has a core of permanent residents.
It has a nice wee shopping area, good restaurants and is handy to the other lakes in the area and to a ski field in winter. It also gives easy access to Aoraki Mt Cook and the Waitaki Valley.

Cute town.
Cute town. It has what one needs to enjoy the getaway—groceries, pharmacy, gas, some clothing stores. And, most importantly, nice people who—in spite of the numbers of tourists who are in and out of town—are kind and helpful. Thank you, Twizel!

Nice little place with easy access by car to several lakes and the Hooker Valley walk. Nice river walk with views to Mt Cook.
Twizel has few tourists that we saw and has a very different feel to it than Tekapo, which we didn’t like at all.
We didn’t eat out in Twizel, but we did see a few restaurants, we cooked at the house as had great facilities there.
Good supermarkets.

Aoraki /Mount Cook National Park is great, go for walk/hike.
Aoraki /Mount Cook National Park is great, go for walk/hike. Try "Twizel" salmon, it is delicious. Twizel town is based on my opinion overrated in overal (visited many other places in NZ). If you want to see Aoraki / Mount Cook two days are enough with Lake Pukaki and Tekapo as well.
Everything!!! Especially after we stayed at Chch central hotel that was too expensive tried to make money for every little adding thing. Your motel was the best place we’ve ever stayed!! Loved it!!! It was crazy storm around Canterbury on the day and we were the only one luckily got to Twizel and they updated the accommodation for us. So flexible and open mind compared to posh stingy hotel in Chch. Also they were happy for our new kitten to stay and he loved it!! Thank you so much for been so lovely to us!! It was a lovely to stay.
A quirky little holiday park with well maintained grounds with room for vans / motorhomes and cabins as well. Our room had plenty of space to fit 4 of us in as well as small eating area and usual bar fridge / kettle etc. The bathroom had been updated and was clean with plenty of hot water and we could park right out the front of our cabin which made moving luggage in and out quite easy. A short stay we didn't speak with any of the staff but they had made arrangements for a late check-in and everything ran smoothly
Really nice apartment in Twizel. Great location only about a 5 minute walk from the main strip. We spent the day in Mount Cook and were heading down to Te Anau the following day and this was the perfect place to spend 1 night to break up our journey and save some time on the road not backtracking to Lake Tekapo for a second night.
Comfortable bed, quiet and clean. Designated parking spot.
We ate at Fishtail for dinner and Mint + Co for breakfast and would recommend both.
The hotel was fit for our purpose, spending little time other than over night stay. It looks amazing from the outside. There is some upgrading in process, which is great and to be fair long over due. I look forward to experiencing the completed article in due course. The water is beautiful, so soft, so great to shave with and shower and, so nice to drink. For value...pretty good, two double beds in our room.
Location and price was great. Exterior design was nice along with a fully equipped kitchen. The best part of this hotel that all of us liked was the customer service provided by the team. We had requested an HDMI cable in order to watch a show on tv and the lady at the reception was helpful and went above and beyond to provide us the cable we had requested. It was great!
This accommodation is perfect for larger groups, offering ample space, every room has its own bathroom.
Very cozy, especially with the fireplace.
The location is a major plus, easily accessible and close to Twizel, but also not a far drive from the awesome landscapes in the area. Our overall experience was great and would definitely book again.
The house was beautiful, very clean and had everything we needed (the kitchen was exceptionally well stocked). The setting was gorgeous with great outdoor spaces and heaps of parking and room to turn around (which was handy with us having a boat). A little outside Twizel on a nice quiet street and nice and close to the lake.
The property is a modern three bedroom holiday home of a good size with most of the amenities of home. A large fridge and a washing machine were appreciated as was the outside seating area. The location is quiet and seems to mostly be other holiday homes. Not too far from the shops where there were several places to eat.
Amazing house, everything you need in a house, comfortable beds, lovely well equipped kitchen, nice 2 outdoor seating areas, nice bathroom, halfway between Mt. Cook and Lake tekapo, fairly quick replies from host, lovely reataurants nearby...fishtail, poppies, high country salmon
Cute little place in the middle to Twizel, close to all things in the area. Very clean and had all we needed in a compact space. Nice patio that you can enjoy a glass of wine or dinner. Very well done with clear instructions on anything you might need.
Nice warm rooms with a separate bedroom.Clean.Very comfortable warm bed.The French girl on reception (sorry didn't get her name) was super friendly and helpful. She provided a hair-dryer. Good shops right in front of hotel.
The location was very convenient for traveling to Mt. Cook National Park. The wide open space was nice too, especially since it's in the dark sky reserve. No food options immediately nearby, but it's not far from Twizel.
Everything was perfect! From the location and friendly staff to the clean and spacious room and complimentary breakfast, the hotel exceeded our expections. Would 100% recommend and come back if we visit NZ again.
Clean, tidy, spacious unit. Cosy and warm. People in Twizel were very friendly and helpful with information about things to do and where to eat.
Would definitely go back and would stay at Colonial Motel again.
If we could give a higher rating, we would. One of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed at. Super warm and homey with an incredibly tranquil view. Delicious breakfast and an ultra clean room.
The location in central Twizel was fantastic. Easy walk to everything you need. Grocery, Bakery, Restaurants etc. The hotel grounds were fantastic. Nice table right outside the room
