We re-visited the Chocolate Eclair shop after a number of years, now under new management, eclairs still amazing. Nice town with the accent on it's access to the snow fields. In the winter season the town would be buzzing but in April very quiet.
Our fish and chip dinner was very disappointing in spite of glowing internet reviews, wouldn't recommend. We should have asked a 'local'

Really enjoyed our dinner at Osteria - Italian, lovely atmosphere, attentive staff, delicious food, very popular. Enjoyed a 3 hr return walk into the Hapuawhenua Viaducts along the Old Coach track (need vehicle/shuttle to get to start) and great area for mountainbiking. Went for a drive up the mountain road with awesome views, and a stop at a nearby waterfall. Then a 1 hr native bush walk ( Mangawhero Forest walk) where friendly little fantails and robins flew about and you could hear the whoosh of wood pigeon high in the trees. Dinner at the PowderKeg - a pub setting with dining area. Again, lovely food and within walking distance of accommodation this time. Good supermarket in town and looked around shops (some vacant as is the case with many small rural towns now) and lovely playground/walkway at the Carrotland Adventure Park, then morning cuppa at the Chocolate eclair shop before departing town.

We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing.
We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing. it's a 35/40 min drive to the car park.
We didn't arrive until the afternoon, settled in then went out for dinner.
Hiked the next day and chilled the day after which we were very glad to rest as the hike for incredible but my body was a bit sore the next day!!
Left after checkout on the 3rd day.
The best place for dinner was the Cyprus tree (book as it getting really busy) it was one of the pricier places we ate but definitely worth it.
Osteria was nice too, cheaper, and had more of a pub feeling.
We went to the Mountain Rocks cafe for breakfast- it was cheap and cheerful. The coffee was very nice.
we had food off the menu but they had lots of cabinet food which looked nice too. Savoury and sweet treats.
Ohakune is a very small town, it suited us perfectly as we had activities to do. Lots of small walks and a waterfall too.

Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Lots of walks of easy access, some without a car. Lots of trail rides (MountainstoSea).
Enough shops + New World (small version of it!) and heaps of cafés and restaurants make Ohakune an easy town to venture from in Summer.
Large selection of accommodation, from backpackers to chalets to Powderhorn Chateau.

Ohakune is a nice stop on the railway between Auckland and Wellington. I was there one day and biked the Ohakune Old Coach Road. I could have stayed one day more and done hiking in the Tongariro National Park or done more biking. A problem is the distance (2.5 - 3 km) to walk between the railway station and the new town center.

We were there for a wedding. The venue was lovely. We went out for dinner which was very nice.
We saw some walkways but didn't have time to go there.
There were many views of the mountain which were stunning.
This was excellent for the cost. It is a 'backpacker' type accomodation but was clean, cosy, everythinng worked well, staff were very helpful. If you are on a budget you will be very pleased, if you just like to save you will be very happy here. If you want luxury look elsewhere. But clean comfortable quiet handy, this is great. We are mid 60's and could easily pay more but like to save and we liked it and would stay here again.
Really good well stocked kitchen facilities, comfortable communal lounges, fantastic mountain view family room, with ensuite & balcony, clean & spacious. Lovely spas & sauna for warming up & unwinding on returning from the slopes. Great cafe right there for good coffee & food. I loved the Ohākune carrot & tumeric soup 😋.
Convenient location & plentiful car parks, friendly staff. Would happily come stay again 😊
This BnB exceeds expectations. Only a few streets away from central Ohakune with three lovely spacious rooms, great facilities, and a fire burner. It was a lovely, cozy place with a well-maintained garden and a friendly cat. The host was very environmentally conscious so they left lots of eco-friendly products and locally sourced food items. Would definitely recommend staying here over any flashy hotel.
The location is perfect right in the middle of Ohakune. Really appreciated the common area including the kitchen, well maintained and spacious with everything we needed. Nice to have a sink in the room when sharing a bathroom. Easy parking out the back of the building. The heaters kept the room at a nice temperature and you can turn them on and off when you like.
THE POSITIVES: The home was light, airy, and spacious. It was well equipped and had all the conveniences you would need to enjoy a few days away with friends. Great location to restaurants, bars, and cafés all within walking distance. Situated in a quiet, family-friendly neighborhood. We enjoyed the logburner ambiance.
The chalets are clean and well furnished. The heat pump had been turned on before our arrival ensuring a comfortable and warm arrival. The grounds are well maintained and communal facilities include sauna and spa. The location is just a short walk into town. Highly recommended.
We stayed here as a family for 2 nights. It had everything we needed and was very comfortable. We liked it so much that we are booked to come back next week. It is definitely the best place for us that we have found so far in Ohakune.
The host was friendly and accommodating to any questions or information we needed. The Lodge was beautiful with lots of space and excellent rooms. Would definitely stay there again!
Good price, cosy and warm, very clean with a generous amount of shampoo etc, had everything you could want eg. Spa bath and oven, perfect for a stopover in Ohakune! Thank you!
Called a backpackers but we had our own double room and bathroom. Right in the town and wonderful view of the mountains. Price was way lower than the competition.
Great Location, quiet and clean. Nice and close to the good Ohakune restaurants.
Parking outside the unit was very convenient.
Comfortable beds and warm too.
Beautiful hotel, exactly what we had hoped for on our trip. Lovely heated pool was a bonus. Bar and restaurant very cosy with welcoming staff. Thanks all.
Such a great place to stay. It's a budget hotel but fantastic value for money. Rooms are basic but have everything you need and the staff are wonderful.
