We re-visited the Chocolate Eclair shop after a number of years, now under new management, eclairs still amazing. Nice town with the accent on it's access to the snow fields. In the winter season the town would be buzzing but in April very quiet.
Our fish and chip dinner was very disappointing in spite of glowing internet reviews, wouldn't recommend. We should have asked a 'local'

Really enjoyed our dinner at Osteria - Italian, lovely atmosphere, attentive staff, delicious food, very popular. Enjoyed a 3 hr return walk into the Hapuawhenua Viaducts along the Old Coach track (need vehicle/shuttle to get to start) and great area for mountainbiking. Went for a drive up the mountain road with awesome views, and a stop at a nearby waterfall. Then a 1 hr native bush walk ( Mangawhero Forest walk) where friendly little fantails and robins flew about and you could hear the whoosh of wood pigeon high in the trees. Dinner at the PowderKeg - a pub setting with dining area. Again, lovely food and within walking distance of accommodation this time. Good supermarket in town and looked around shops (some vacant as is the case with many small rural towns now) and lovely playground/walkway at the Carrotland Adventure Park, then morning cuppa at the Chocolate eclair shop before departing town.

We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing.
We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing. it's a 35/40 min drive to the car park.
We didn't arrive until the afternoon, settled in then went out for dinner.
Hiked the next day and chilled the day after which we were very glad to rest as the hike for incredible but my body was a bit sore the next day!!
Left after checkout on the 3rd day.
The best place for dinner was the Cyprus tree (book as it getting really busy) it was one of the pricier places we ate but definitely worth it.
Osteria was nice too, cheaper, and had more of a pub feeling.
We went to the Mountain Rocks cafe for breakfast- it was cheap and cheerful. The coffee was very nice.
we had food off the menu but they had lots of cabinet food which looked nice too. Savoury and sweet treats.
Ohakune is a very small town, it suited us perfectly as we had activities to do. Lots of small walks and a waterfall too.

Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Lots of walks of easy access, some without a car. Lots of trail rides (MountainstoSea).
Enough shops + New World (small version of it!) and heaps of cafés and restaurants make Ohakune an easy town to venture from in Summer.
Large selection of accommodation, from backpackers to chalets to Powderhorn Chateau.

Ohakune is a nice stop on the railway between Auckland and Wellington. I was there one day and biked the Ohakune Old Coach Road. I could have stayed one day more and done hiking in the Tongariro National Park or done more biking. A problem is the distance (2.5 - 3 km) to walk between the railway station and the new town center.

We were there for a wedding. The venue was lovely. We went out for dinner which was very nice.
We saw some walkways but didn't have time to go there.
There were many views of the mountain which were stunning.
It’s a flop and drop chill out pad. In a quiet, secluded location ( you can hear the goods train in the morning). The chalet is ideally placed for adventure and exploring. It is cosy and comfortable if you need to take a break from motels/hotels. It has all amenities ( no ironing board, if that’s a must) We loved the location and the property was nostalgic for us as we have owned and cherished such pads in our own family. It feels like a friends and family accommodation.
Great location overlooking the mountain. The pub attached to the hotel does fantastic food and has a good selection of beers on tap. The room is simple, but had everything we needed and was clean and comfortable. The staff were really friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome.
Loved the decor of the room and hotel, few things a little dated in the bathroom and room which could use refreshing. Reception were lovely and a good guide to the area. Resturant was good service for understaffed and busy with rugby, everyone was lovely.
We had a wonderful 2 night stay here. The accommodation was clean, spacious and had a washer and dryer as well which we weren’t expecting. The kitchen had with cutlery and cooking supplies along with a dishwasher which isn’t commonly found here.
A very handy motel with good facilities. It was very clean and had all the good motel features one would expect. It was roomy. It was in a good location within walking distance ro driving distance if preferred of the small township of Ohakune.
Our room was initially not as booked but was rectified promptly & with apologies. Facilities are awesome, enjoyed the spa, played pool & great breakfast. Very friendly staff & we enjoyed chatting with fellow guests in the lodge, lots of fun .
Perfect location. Clean and tidy rooms. Nice and warm. The heater was already on for our arrival. Everything you need for a nice stay. Staff were so helpful and welcoming. Couldn't of asked for anything more!! The spa pools were fantastic!!
Location was good. Good it has everything you need. Full kitchen, bathroom and laundry and seperate bedrooms. Would be good to know there was the option of your own private spare or slightly more comfort and upgrades in different chalets
it was spacious for a studio, superbly clean and has been well cared for and maintained. the bed was firm and not old and saggy as with some motels. Great shower water pressure and instant heat. It was all simple and easy.
Great friendly staff, great location. Close to walks and great pubs. Beds were fantastic especially considering the price and style of accommodation. Stayed in the loft studio, which was very spacious and comfortable.
It was so clean, probably the cleanest place I have ever been to including hotels.
Also they had a drying room which was very handy.
Their spa is amazing and clean, just what we want after snowboarding.
Spacious clean modern room. All facilities you needed. Easy access into town. Very friendly welcome and helpful advice for accessing local amenities and activities. Would certainly recommend to anyone.
